Wearing skirts

In my era I was taught to always wear a slip under my skirt. In a way I can see how that makes sense because of the gauzy material summer skirts are made of. However, it's summer. The slip just doesn't fit in with keeping cool. On the other hand I don't want to be on "exhibit" nor appear inappropriately dressed I've seen many women wearing skirts without a slip. I can see their legs. Seeing legs is not offensive. After all, we wear shorts. What's the trend these days? Slip or no slip???

Hi joyce...I still wear slips even in the summer. I know that some women don't because of a personal preference but I just feel better wearing a slip. It's possible that sometimes when I'm not at work and it's just me at home I won't wear a slip. But when I'm at work I always wear a slip.

Since I don't work (no dress code) I might be bold and daring. Wear the skirt, look feminine and leave the slip in the dresser drawer. Whew!

Hello I only wear one if it is a more dressy skirt , or if it is something longer, and very formal. In the summer I wear ones , but they are super casual and shorter. Usually a jean skort , or a tennis type , and it is not needed . A long hippie one in the summer heck no to the slip , it just gets annoying . I say do what makes ya comfy

Well I don't really wear skirts much anymore, although do have a few of those long skirts known as the "broomstick" style..but nope never wore a slip underneath when I did wear them. In my younger years when I did wear either skirts or dress on a regular basis never wore one either--when I say younger years, I mean the 60s and 70s when mini-skirts first came the rage...there just weren't slips short enough for those itsy bitsy skirts...LOL

I don't know what current trends are as I've lost my connections with the fashion world, but when I was a young teenager, my mum used to try to encourage me to wear a slip. I asked her why one day, and she told me that it was to stop static, and prevent my skirt from riding up my legs when I walked. In more recent years, I find that the problem of my skirt riding up doesn't happen.....possibly because (as I am rather old lol) they are made of fabrics which weren't around when I was a lot younger - fabrics which possibly could reduce static? When young, I always found wearing a slip very uncomfortable, especially in hot weather. For my own personal preferences, I have for many years gone down the no slip route as I can't see the point in them.

Thanks for your response. Today I wore a skirt with shorts underneath. Then I bought a pants slip. I'll try that and see how it goes.

I wear a slip sometimes to give an extra girly touch. If I'm wearing a pencil skirt its nice to know some lace is showing through the back slit. Slips were once a bit old fashioend I think, but I definitely see more girls who are wearing a lip these days and don't mind if a bit of it shows....

I also like wearing skirts and dresses but I don't like to wear a slip underneath it. I used to wear a slip when I was wearing school uniforms from grade school to high school. I live in a hot and humid country so thats why I feel uncomfortable and don't like wearing a slip anymore.

I like wearing skirts too and usually i wear a short like slip when i wear my skirt. I am not used having a skirt without it on. I think i got to used wearing on that when i am not wearing a shorts like skirt i am not comfortable about it. Nice share and have a great day. I think for summer wearing a skirt without a slip is okay since it is really hot.

skirts hmmmm not sure how i feel about them. i don't like it but i don't hate it either. during my school days i was kind of tomboyish and the only skirt i would ever have would be my uniform's skirt as i went to an international school uniforms were a protocol. nowadays i tend to get a little more wilder with my feminine side. i buy skirts but i don't wear them there are very few occasions only where i wear them or when im out on a date. i just prefer to wear shorts or pants it makes me feel more free. being said so even when i do wear skirts i never wear the slip. I've never been asked to wear a slip so i just generally don't and girls nowadays come up with shorter and shorter skirts they might as well wear nothing. cheers love.

I guess how I grew up, I never really wore too many skirts and no one was really around to tell me what the proper etiquette was. I never even knew what a slip was until I got fitted for a prom gown I think. It's kind of sad that we've lost a lot of knowledge and that people don't know or weren't handed down the knowledge from elder family members.

I wear slips under my skirt and my dresses.it is more of a precaution for me.I don't want to flash my undies to anybody.also,it helps me feel comfortable when I go up the stairs or escalator.the person behind me can't see my underwear.

wearing skirts is not that daring, it depends on the one wearing it, on how she handles it. women should also consider if wearing skirts will make them look good, but if they will looked awful, better not wearing it anymore.

I never wear slips, on the rare occasions that I wear skirts. But it's usually because they're shorter jean skirts, and that's just not what you do. It would be funny-looking to wear a slip under these things because they're so short ANYWAY that it just wouldn't make any sense. You would probably SEE the slip under the jean skirt. I think I probably would wear a slip under a fancy skirt or something that I'd wear to work if I had a job in a professional office. Otherwise? Why worry about it? And my style doesn't really call for it anyway.

I would have to say, no slip. :-) In my opinion, a slip is only necessary when the weather is a bit nippy. To even consider wearing a slip during the warmer months is just absolute torture to one's self! :-) Seeing a person's legs, as you say, is not much of a big deal. Not trying to sound too religious, but thank God that the person you are seeing has legs to stand on. :-) The best form of advice would be: if you do not want to wear a slip, but you are worried about your legs being seen, just wear a shirt or dress made of thick material. :-)
