Is it still worth it working abroad?

I guess everyone can feel the jitter of economic meltdown not only in the US where many of our fellow Filipinos migrate each year. Not There are also those who serve in European countries as well as Middle eastern countries. Although some areas are not harshly affected, the effect is still on its onslaught. I know that our family members want to provide for their family's need but is it worth the risk of losing even more if they are sent back earlier than their contract? Do you think that BPO companies are better choice of employment today that can pretty well sustain our domestic workforce?

I would say, It is still worth if you have a good job offer from abroad. If you are sure of a good employer it is worth. It is true that jobs are now scarce here in US but if you have specialty that is in demand here, you still have a chance to get a better job. Provided, your entry is legal and you have employer. Try your luck,

There is of course no better way of going abroad and working than doing things in a legal manner. Working in another country is already a risk, and i think illegal entry is adding another risk.

I don't think working abroad is the most ideal thing to do right now. So far, Philippines is not really miserable when it comes to financial aspects, I have heard much worse conditions in some other countries including the highly industrialized one. In Japan, the government is trying to offer financial packages to Latin American immigrants to fly back to their home. In Europe most companies reduced their workers, I have a cousin in Ireland who lost his job because of the recession. So I have no plan to go abroad right now because it is better to work here than suffer the consequences of financial crisis in another land.

True enough. We are indeed doing better than most other countries. And at times it even looks like we are benifitting more than losing from these tough times in one way or another.

Yes i think so but it still depends on what country you're going to. If you are hardworking and could do a lot of business stuff here that you are capable of, why settle abroad?

Well, it is still worth working abroad since the condition of our country doesn't seem to change. Although we need to really choose the best job and be in an agency that is worth our money and time to help us facilitate our papers abroad. This is so sad for our country but yes, I would still say that working abroad is the option to have a better life...have a great day!

To some, it still worth it, but to others, it is not. It depends really on your working and financial status here in the country and in the job available abroad. If you have a good job here that can afford your basic needs and gives you some savings, then why would you take the risk working abroad? But if you really want more in life and you can't afford to save for your kids future and there;a a good chance of having a work abroad, then why not take the risk? You are talking of global crisis, well, the loss of some is gain for others. Some are affected badly by the crisis but there are those who are gaining from the situation. Who knows, the work you have here might also be affected but the one available in other countries has a greater chance of being in demand. The job there might be offering good compensation and other benefits that even just a few months working there can pay back the expenses in going there.

That sure is well thought. I would agree that the crisis indeed brought good out of the bad situation and I must say in a way Philippines is recipient of that good thing. I guess it's all a matter of knowing what your real priorities in life are. The question whether it is worth taking the risk and sacrificing your family's fellowship for financial gain is a personal choice.

For me no. why work abroad if you can work in the Philippines. If you have some money why spend them abroad, spend them in the Philippines. Make a business here in the Philippines and help other co-Filipinos to stand up on their own. Be an example to other people to help rise the economic of the Philippines. We should love our own country. We can make it through our cooperation. across other continents, you can see Filipinos working for others. IT always make me sad if i talked to other Filipinos to other country that they would not like to go back to their home land because they don't want to take the risk.

I'm glad to have read your response and it is well appreciated most especially the patriotic fire burning in your heart. I understand that many Filipinos have the feeling that they can only attain success or prosperity in other countries, but your thoughts are true, if we can only make a way to keep most of the workers who are topnotch in their chosen field to work here, if we can only sustain unity not only during Pacquiao fights, I'm sure the Philippines would be a much better place.

Well if you can get a good paying BPO then might as well stay in here. Going abroad would mean a lot of money you have to spend for you to work there. In a BPO you can get the money locally and live well financially well.

When we took our cruise many of the crew members there were Filipinos and they had to work long hours to provide for their families, sending their paychecks home and since most of the cruisers are rich or retired, it is a better chance there then going to work in Europe where the recession will be worse. At least people with money want to eat, but people who are struggling to make ends meet cannot afford to share their wages. But what happens when the places that provided employment for people as domestics find that they cannot afford to pay their domestics. I remember hearing from my grandmother how it was common in England and in America for middle class (and not wealthy families to have a cook and a maid), but now the housewife does it herself. So there will come a time, when the middle class in the Middle Class and the rest of Europe will no longer be able to pay their domestics wages and they will be out of a job.

well if our BPO here can sustain our needs why dont we grab it and work in here so that were not far away from our family instead of working abroad. coz right its so hard to find a job a abroad because of recession happenings so its better to stay here in our own country.

From experience, Y-E-S. It is still worth working in the US, considering the economic status of the Philippines...and the peace and order condition down south. Aside from that, by working abroad, I get to have more benefits from their government, than in the Philippines. I am not saying that we all should migrate, thoug. I know that one day, I still would want to go home.
