What do you do when you meet strangers?

Let me get more specific, what do you have in mind when you meet a stranger, what do you say with them to break the ice? I find it very hard to find some topics to talk about when I am first introduced with a stranger as nothing seems appropriate to talk about. And more of the time, I just don't have any topics in mind. So, what about you? Do you have some preset topics that can be used whenever you meet a stranger?

usually i check if that person is interested in sports i like..like say if he's interested in football then we talk about the latest match or something on those lines.. if its a member of the opposite gender then i usually end up discussing music, my lack of culinary skills etc. with them...:P

I usually talk to them about something that is going on around us at the time. For example, if I'm in line at a store and they seem frustrated about the hold up sometimes I'll make a little joke about it if they look like an overall friendly person. I don't really have preset topics though, it's more situational.

I try not to have anything preset because I feel like it just wouldn't be natural and it just might lead to an empty conversation. Most of the time it is a little difficult but I try to bring up something about both of our surroundings that would sparka quick conversation. Kind of like the "do you come here often?" but not as cliche or corny. I just try to pick up on something that I could ask a question about to the other person and get a quick little conversation going. Usually the answers will start off short but will then get longer and longer as you both get more comfortable with talking to each other. But it's all about trying to be social... and a good way of doing that is asking little questions and putting in your own input... hey, for every question there's gotta be an answer.
