The Worst Winter in Your City???

I live in a tropical country where the sun always shines for almost 365 days a year. It's warm and humid everywhere. But I sometimes read about the bad winter in four-seasons countries, and I always wonder how people survive from such severe condition. What about in you, how bad is the winter in your city?? How many degree Celsius or Fahrenheit is the coldest temperature during the worst winter?? How did you manage to stay warm?? And last but not least, did you buy enough foods for the whole winter???

There are very bad winters where I live. I am near a lake and get lots of snow. I have seen a few feet of snow at times and plenty of ice. The temperatures usually stay between 30-20 degrees F but have reached below zero in severe weather. I stay bundled up in lots of warm clothes when I have to go out and always have a fire going in the house. Driving in the bad is the scariest of all. It is very difficult to control a vehicle in such bad weather. Very scary! I will stock up enough on food so that I won't have to go out too often but I still have to drive to work each day despite the weather. Sometimes I will take a day off from work if the snow is too high or the roads are too icy. I wish I could skip the winters. The snow is beautiful but it is also very cold and very bad to travel in.

Where I live, we get a big blizzard once every several years. Not too often but once is too often for my liking. LOL. The one that I remember the most is back in 2000. It was Super Bowl Sunday. It was the Rams and Titans. It had already been snowing a lot but we still had power. Then as soon as they got to kickoff, boom, the power goes out and stayed out for 2 weeks. That sucked. The most boring 2 weeks of my life.

I'm living in Chicago and have been here most of my life. Winters here of course means snow, and usually lots of it. We've gotten some heavy snows(sometimes up to 2 feet at a time) but nothing I would consider a blizzard in quite a while. Winter in Chicago also means cold. This past winter we saw temps down to -15 degrees Fahrenheit. No fun at all. But the winter in Chicago that really knocks you around is the wind chill factor. This is the combination of the temperature with how hard the wind is blowing and from which direction. I've walked in wind chills down to -50 or 60 degrees. The air hurts to breathe. It always feels like the winter weather will never go away. But here it is May, and I'm taking care of my first sunburn of the year. Yay, Spring!

worst winter of my life was this past one. It was just unbelievable. It got down to -28 degrees Celsius and everything was frozen. The worst part of it was that I had to go out no matter what because I could not miss my classes. I hate layering clothes but that was the only way I could keep up with the cold. So basically a lot of clothes, scarves, mittens, hats and boots. Good thing I didn't have to worry too much about it when I was inside. However food was not a big issue because we do not live too far from a grocery store, thankfully!!

There's no winter in our country as its situated in a tropical rain forest climate. though I'm living near the highest point in its northern part, temperature can drop to about -3 degrees on average leaving crystallized humid trapped into any surfaces only in areas where the wind does not cross them. This only happen during the trade wind blow, which can be experienced from December to February.

I live in a country that has the four seasons, but most of the time it's warm here. The Winter is not that bad in my area. We do have lots of raining during the Winter, but I never saw snow here, so I never felt a true Winter. I love the Summer, and I wish I could live in a place you'r living in right now. I hate the freezing cold, and when you can't get out because of it. What I do when it's really really cold outside is I make myself a hot choco, put a blanket on me, and sleep with my dog in the same bed because his fur makes me warmer.

Winter weather usually starts here at the end of november, or the beginning of december, and goes through till about the end of march. Temps are usually between 20 and 30 Fahrenheit, but wind chills can be -10, and it is very windy all the time. We also get something called 'lake effect' snow, which is where the air mass moving east picks up moisture from crossing the lake, and then proceeds to drop several feet of snow fifteen miles from the lakeshore. I know that there are areas which recieve harder winters, but where I live winter is still kinda harsh. As far as food is concerned, I don't really stock up at all. I live in a fairly urban area, and I have four-wheel drive, so going out in the weather is not a big deal, unless it is a blizzard, but those rarely last for more than a day. The best way to stay warm is to dress in layers, and have blankets handy, since a household heating system can only do so much. Another good idea is to check your house for drafts, etc., and make sure that they are taken care of. So, how do you handle living in such a warm climate? I like a beautiful summer day as well as the next person, but I don't know if I could handle that heat and humidity year round. What are the highest temperatures that your area has gotten to, and how do you stay cool?

2 years ago 3 ice storms hit back to back and left 1 1/2 inches of ice. It started early one Friday afternoon. I was on my way to the last job of the day and it started pouring. I'm a window washer so I just by passed that job and went right to my bosses house to pick up my check. I drove the 40 miles to the small town not far from home, to cash my check and pick up some groceries. It was just after 1 in the afternoon so no one was out of work yet and I was able get in and out pretty quick. 8 miles down the highway and I got off at my exit, just as the rain turned to ice. It was falling pretty lightly by now, so it wasn't too bad. Just had 2 miles to go. I get home, load the wood burning stove, bring in a bunch of wood and load the porch full too and I'm all set. made it home before the bad weather really hit and now I can ride out this one small ice storm. At 9 p.m. the lights went out and they didn't come on again for 9 days. The following day was Saturday and the sun was shining, how could we know by that night we'd get more ice, followed by more sun. Followed by more ice.
