What has your city government done to help relieve the city traffic stress?

Free bike service for Hangzhou citizens - This is a photo taken in Hangzhou City when I was waiting for a bus to the North Bus Station back to Anji Town on May 17th, 2009. I have been to Hangzhou three times, but the first two times I did not take my digital camera with me and could not take a photo of it. So this time I am very glad to have a chance to take a photo of it and share it with you, my fellow myLotters in the hope that you enjoy it.

A look at the picture with a row of bikes of the same color, what do you get? This is a picture that I took yesterday afternoon (May 17th, 2009) when I was waiting for a bus in Hangzhou City, the most beautiful city in China. I am very glad to know that the city government made the plan to have so many bikes placed in many sections of the city for its citizens to use for free within one-hour ride, but if it exceeds one hour, the one who uses it will pay a little fee for the use. I think that it is a good idea of the city government to help relieve the stress of the city traffic as well as a very good service. The city government must have spent large sums of money to have and maintain this kind of infrastructure. It is really a convenient service for its citizens. I hope other cities in China will follow this good idea. So what has your city government done to help improve and relieve the stress of the city traffic, please?

Hi William Thanks for sharing this bit of story from your part of the world. Its amazing little vision can change our lives! It doesn't take much to implement s mall small things that can create examples for many countries like ours. The bikes are small, colorful and eco friendly. And the fact that one hour ride is free makes it easier for common people. I really appreciate your City's vision! I just wish our country and many other countries do something like this. It's our world and the responsibility to keep it beautiful and safe for the kids lies on us. Thanks.

Thanks William for sharing this story with us. I remember seeing some kind of bicycles which they in rent to the visitors to travel and look around some hill resort. That's a good thing actually. If only they make it compulsive in some places to reduce pollution.

Hello mimpi. When I first saw a low of bikes on the side of the street, I was surprised and wondered why. I got to know this from my nephew working in the city and I am quite in favor of the government's plan good to its citizens. In fact, in some scenic spots, there are more free bikes, rows of bikes available for use. I saw this when I was on the bus. Take care, mimpi.

They also have this service for renting bikes to travelers. It is ten yuan per hour. It is another kind of bike and smaller.

Wow, what a cool idea! Around here the solution seems to be just build more lanes on our interstates. The traffic problem here is the highways and interstates, not the regular roads. While I don't like to go through the long construction and I really don't like to see bigger highways built, there is one positive from this. The fact that they are doing this creates more jobs. And with people needing jobs so badly, this employs a lot of people who need these jobs so desperately.

Hello AmbiePam. To make the traffic more smooth, highways are also built in the city of Hangzhou to avoid the traffic jam during rushing hours.

Ours are just being widened. Sometimes I wonder what our city looked like hundreds of years ago, before highways and traffic problems, you know?

I still remember how the ancient city---Ganzhou, where I was born looked like decades ago. It was a city built during the Song Dynasty with a lot of walls in the east, west, south and north. Parts of the walls in the east, west and north of the city are still well kept and have been repaired, but not the walls in the south because the city has been expanding in the south. But I still miss the old small city a lot. Fast city development is making a lot of changes to the ancient cities...

Nothing really, traffic is at a mess here in Calcutta and getting worse by the day. Now that the world's smallest car is out of the factory and people are booking like mad, the traffic scenario promises to become worse with much more cars running on pre-existing narrow roads. We see no solution to this as most of the roads have dense population on both sides, rows and rows of houses and shops and relocating them or giving them compensation would make a pauper of the govt. So there they stay and our roads stay that way, crowded and chaotic. Its wonderful though to see that the Govt has taken so much initiative at your place. Biking is one of the best and safest way of traffic, no pollution too.

Hello friend. Calcutta is a very large city in India so far as I know. I think that it is a little more difficult to smooth the traffic stress in a large city like that. Speaking of the world's smallest car made in India, Tata Nano, I am really interested in it. I hope that it will come to our market in China soon. I like it as it is small and convenient and cheap as well. If it is run by electricity, it will be much better as there will be no consumption of oil. So I would like to know what you think of the car, Nano.

that is really good that your government has provided free bicycle to use for an hour. we don't have that in the philippines. we would love to have that too. but our pedestrians are for automobiles. they are trying to find a way how to make a lane for bikers. but this will involve serious work and that means road widening which will not be easy. i would like to see my city like yours.

In my country, they asked policeman to stop to give warning or give punisment like holding driver licence. They make rules, for certain city car must be at least 3 passengger plus the driver. So, there is no more private car that only one person inside. This will help to reduce traffic crowded then. Because many family member have their own car to go, have minimum 2 cars. Can not imagine if this family group brought their own car on the street, multiply this one with thousand family..

It is a good idea that a car is fully used with no empty seats. This way less air pollution is produced.

Our city engineer took a very big step to ease the traffic in one of our busy roads. It is the very first in the world. An elevated U-turn was concreted to one of our major roads. Surprisingly it is helpful. There are elevated walkways too for pedestrians. I hope some of our major roads and streets will be changed too to accomodate the accumulating ingestion of vehicles.

Hi William, My first question to you my dear friend, William; what's the selling price for that very good looking bicycle in USD per unit? Your digital camera really works for you I think you can sell your photo at shareapic site because it is a photo above 3MP. OK ~ back to your point of discussion. The government already upgraded the public transport management and control, here it is called in acronym as PTMC. Where the system involved the supply and demand to general public transportation needs. Secondly, upgraded the GPS(Global Positioning System) where the announcement has been made through all type of media; electronic, web, printed, and NGO body. All of it is for one motive; to reduce congestion rate. New Prime Minister want all parties collaborate seriously in making use the public transport provided while promoting economy growth in public transport sector. For future plan; in fact now in progress, the LRT(Light Rail Train) railway will be extended to more populated areas fully equipped with huge parking area at every station. Hopes someday there will be also many city folks will use bicycle in the city. Less black and more green...hahaha!

Hello Michael. I think that that kind of bike is around 300 RMB. For the time being one US dollar is equal to seven and sometimes a little less than seven RMB. Anyway it is cheap to buy a bike. So I guess that it is around a little bit more than forty seven dollars. Yes, I still remember the site you mentioned. I was a member there, but I forgot my password there and could not log in any more. I think that it was expired long ago, years ago. I am glad that your government is doing a good job in improving the conditions of transportations to make traffic more smooth. It is good to know that. Besides, you know, China is a country with large number of bikes and they are welcome everywhere in the country.

Not really. Constuction here, there and everywhere. Highways closing. Detours are all over the place. They seem to be making things worse. Sounds like your city is on the right track.

Hello ersmommy. I have to admit that it is the same that we have construction everywhere. Right now there are many new buildings in the city as well as in the small town where I live now. But what is good is that they are also making the streets wider for traffic...

I work in a city in my country with heavy everyday traffic. Due to heavy traffic, the traffic enforcers are very strict. There are specific and separate loading and unloading zones. Violators are really apprehended. Illegally parked cars are towed. Traffic lights can be found almost anywhere in the city and many roads are one-ways. These are the implementations in my city that cannot be found on some other parts of my country with lesser road traffics.

Hello wrangel. Thank you for sharing with me about the traffic situation in your city. I think that it is good to have lots of one-ways for cars and buses to run through, which makes the traffic more easily to pass.

Hello marketing friend. I am really amazed by this good service from the city government and think it as a very good idea that is worth recommending to some other cities. Many of the streets here are also being widened a lot than they used to. I am glad to see its progress having made in recent years. Good day, friend.

Hi William,it seems that my city-GZ doesn't have this kinda service-free bike~~I just keep wonder the way of the government to control the moral hazard? How to prevent the bike being stolen? How if someone doesn't return the bike?

Hello tonytt. If you want to use the bike, you need to have one special card and deposit two hundred yuan as credits in the card before you can use a free bike. If you give a close look at the photo, you will find that they are all locked to the iron bars for the bikes. The one who uses it is known because s/he has to input the card information before using it. So there is no worry about the loss of the bikes. It is a good policy welcomed by its citizens.

WoW W.J.S... I am truly impressed.....Free bike ride to different parts of the city....!!!..I think its a wonderful idea.....It will not only help to reduce traffic cogestion, but will really be a blessing to commuters who have to travel to different parts of the city within a short time for their personal requirements..... Sigh..Unfortunately my city government has no such plans...Here we have traffic jams all the time and the number of vehicles keeps on increasing every day.............Perhaps my government can borrow this wonderful idea from you people..........

Hello cindy. This is a very popular policy made by the city government to help relieve the city traffic stress. I hope that it works well. Years ago, I also had my mountain bike stolen and had to buy another new one. Now this bike of mine has been in use for five years though it is rusty on the surface of the front part.

Hello beauty queen. Life in a small city or town is much more peaceful without that much traffic. I like life in a small town as well as that in a big city as they offer us different pleasures. I am glad that you enjoy the photo that I took. I could have taken a photo with many more bikes at a scenic spot next to the Qiangjiang River, but I did not try as I was sitting all the way on the bus. Enjoy your beautiful life like a queen, my dear friend. Take care.

In my country, the traffic jam is simply and utterly horrendous. You can get stuck in traffic for hours even if the distance is not that far. That is why sometimes I just walk to my destination because it is faster. You can see the police officers just standing by and ignoring the heavy traffic jam. They do nothing but stand and wave a little. Police officers in my country are totally useless and corrupt.

What my local city government has done to help with the ever growing stress of traffic is that they have created a motorcycle and bike lane on one of the major roads in my city and this might be something small but they are making some really good changes and they are also thinking of getting rid of some of the unnecessary stop signs that are on the smaller streets as well.
