An exciting walk up to Glastonbury tor

Glastonbury Tor - The ruined church at the top of the Tor

Last Sunday, which had very changeable weather, after spending the morning in my home town, decided to take an afternoon trip to Glastonbury. Wanted to go to the whole food shop, to buy a few special foods I couldn't get locally, have a wander round the small, independent, new age type shops and lastly, have a bit of exercise and walk up to the Tor. When you see shots of the 'Pyramid' stage at Glastonbury festival on TV, the Tor can sometimes be seen in the background! Today, making my ascent, up the back way, to the Tor, the weather took a turn for the worse, it decided to rain, with the wind deciding to blow quite hard at the same time. It was just as well that I had my wet weather gear with me! You could quite believe you were at sea with the sound of the howling gale!!! The few people that I met on the path were all wrapped up well in their water proofs. Reached the top and found a few folks sheltering in the ruined tower of a church that once stood at the top of the tor. Spent a little while taking in the views through the misty, rainy sodden atmosphere. Started me thinking about the festival that I would be going to at the end of June. Have already bought some welly boots and a rain poncho in preparation! Mud, here I come!!! Going back down the hill (the front way) was needless to say easier. At the bottom made my way to the white spring, which is in a building built into the hill. It was lit only by candles and is windowless. It took a while for my eyes to adjust. It was certainly other worldly. So, tell my about YOURexciting walk.....

Even though the weather wasn't all that great you went to Glastonbury and had a superb time. I like to visit well stocked health food shops to get some of the vegan food that they sell. The walk up the Tor is so very enjoyable and at the top there are some really picturesque views. I love to see the patchwork fields below. A couple of years ago I took a walk up the Tor and it was really windy at the top. Just as I reached the bottom a heavy spell of rain came down. Walking along the street I found a telephone box to shelter in. One of the most exciting walks I have done was day three of the Queen Charlotte Walk on the South Island of New Zealand. It involved nine hours of walking including a long stretch that was over a narrow ridge way with sea both sides. It was up and down quite a lot. I got some incredibly picturesque views but one wrong step would have been dangerous. I was exhausted by the time I reached the camp site. My baggage had traveled by boat and was waiting for me. I quickly put my tent up and climbed inside. I slept soundly that night. Day four of the walk was less demanding. I love walking in the countryside and by the sea.

The Queen Charlotte Walk sounds very adventurous! Yes a walk round Glastonbury town and Tor usually seems to turn up something a bit different. And usually at some stage, I feel a little disorientated and are not sure exactly what direction I'm headed for! There seems to be some kind of space/ time warp in Avalon!
