We always had tons of bookshelves. The books were then arranged by category. Kids books in one section. Adult books in the other section. The books were then broken up into smaller groups. All of the sesame street books were together. All of the rainbow bright books were together. All of the 'my little golden book's were together. All of the fantasy books are in one place. all of the finance books are in one place. That way you dont have to search through all of the books everytime you want something. You can just find the right category and only sort through a few! Good luck!

What our parents did for us is arrange the books by type and by size because its hard to have different size books together without it looking really bad. First arrange them by size - maybe not exact but at least by the average size so therefore when you put them on the shelves they look really nice and neat. Next I would then go off and find the sets that you have. For us we had many series and what not so those would automatically get grouped together, and then if you have a ton by the same author then group those together as well. Afterwards you may decide its best to group them by type, fiction, horror, etc. or by author, etc.

Just put the same types of books together. Don't worry about missing pages. Reading those will be the private decision of the reader. Just put all similar ones together.

Hi Mhethess, I arrange my books by authors, then the titles in alphabetical order. I'm very possessive about my books, so I keep those I value, inside my bedroom; the rest are kept in the cupboard in the upstairs hall. These are books that I have not read; but once I have finished with them, I will most probably give them away.

You should arrange books according to their category like books for children should be in one shelf and do the same with the rest of the books. Also in arranging you can follow the small to big or better big to small books arrangement. Better put them in standing position and not putting them one over another. If books are arranged in standing position it will be easier for you to get one you would like to read. Also out some label beside the shelves so that you can easily see what book or which shelf the book you are looking for belongs to. That way if ever one shelf is messed up it will not affect the others not used. If you have been in a library before you can follow the arrangement of the books there. Another suggestion (which I personally do with my books) is to inform borrowers to take care of the pages and the book itself. I do not allow them to fold books, any kind of folding is not allowed. I am very strict when it comes to my books because I want to keep them as new as possible. And in case the one who borrowed never took care of the book then he or she can't borrow again. That is how I love my books.

Hi! Nice discussion. I only arranged books according to their sizes. big to small books. I don't know if this is the correct one. But my husband doesn't like my arrangement. He arranged my books for me. He has his own style too. He arranged our books by subject and by author. This arranged alphabetically.

place them in diffrent bookshelves with the different categories.you could put the children books together at one bookshelf and pocket books in another bokshelf.that would be easy.after the readers reading the book, you should ask them to give the book to you and check if any pages destroyed or not and place it in the right place, just allow them to pick the books they want to read but do not return it,they must mix them up

I have a friend who arranged her books according to color. It looked SO cool!!! Of course that doesen't make it easy to find the books if they aren't in any type of subject or title order. My best advice to you is to arrange them on a very large bookshelf. Do it like a real library or book store and arrange them by author or title in alphabetical order. Good luck to you! :-) I know how frustrating it can be trying to organize books and also when you find that they've been ripped or torn.

hi thess... of course separating books (according to age use) is the first part of arranging them... which i assume is what you're doing. children books are put on the lower shelves so kids can get it right away, dont put adult books there like pocketbooks, so kids will not tear it, it is not interesting to them since there are no pictures in it... lol in your shelves put a note that says "please return it properly" it does help you know... sometimes people need to see instructions to follow... lol ... those books that are very important and expensive put them in the topmost shelf so those little hands will not reach them. those that have torn pages, either you put them back using scotch tape or glue, that is what i do here. i have lots of books too and have kept them for a very long time... it was when we moved to our new house more than 2 years ago that i started giving them away because i realized that my kids are not into reading, and im the only one that loves reading here. so to put my books to good use, i have donated them and left only a few of my favorites that i tend to read over and over again when i have time and i feel like reading it again.

I have hundreds of books and i don't know how to arrange them either now.I just put them all in a big wooden box,and it is really a mess,i can't take the books at the bottom of the box unless i take them all out. i am thinking maybe i should pave them on the floor like a carpet ,then i can get them easily whenever i want.lol.

I believe that the easiest way to arrange books would be either by size or by subject. Depending on how many books you have it might be easy to do so with subject that way you know exactly what book is where and don't have to look through a whole lot of books. For example, separate all of the books on a certain subject from the others, separate the children books and also the bigger books from each other. This will not only make it easier for the books to be easier found but it will also give it a sense of organization.
