If you knew someone was abusing their cat or dog would you call the police?

Let's say that you knew a person who left their dog outside during a hurricane, would you report them to the police? What about a person that refused to feed their cats or expected them to fend for themselves? Would that be considered animal cruelty? In some jurisdictions, animal abuse and cruelty is against the law. What would you do for the animals? Report the owner to police?

Without a doubt, I would call the police, the Humane Society, maybe even Oprah and Dr. Phil. All animals deserve to be well treated and taken care of. I'm so sick of the way some people mistreat animals.

I would call in a heartbeat. I have zero tolerance for those type of people. After all, in my opinion, it shows the way they probably treat humans is exactly the same. If you have no respect for any living creature you have none for yourself or others either.

So true, they did have an option to have that pet or not, so if they weren't really willing to be responsible for it, then why have him/her in the first place? I do agree when you said that if they can't treat their pets nice then they could treat people that way too. I for one would also call the police.

Animal cruelty should not be reported to the police but to the ASPCA or animal control. They are the ones who have the jurisdiction to investigate cruelty charges and when prudent to take the animals away from the abusive owners. They can also press criminal charges if they can prove abuse. And yes, I would always report abuse against animals if I was aware of it!

Yes. I would definitely report someone who was abusing their animals. Especially someone who was starving the animals. This is just awful. People who are not capable of taking care of an animal should not own one in the first place. The animal should be remove from the neglegent person's home.

Reporting abuse of any kind, should be the law. I don't care if it's abusing of a woman or man, a child, the elderly, or any kind of animal, if abuse is suspected, a report should be filed, and if abuse is proven, the appropriate legal actions should be taken to stop the problem. If I caught someone abusing anyone or anything, I'd report it.

This is true. Report all kinds of abuse! If you really think about it, if someone is capable of abusing an animal, why couldn't they abuse a human too? All forms of abuse are wrong. Treat others as you wish to be treated...including our animal friends!!!!!

Yes, I would call the police in both cases. If the police refused to do something in a timely manner, the animal might just be "pet-napped" and relocated to a new home unknown to the abuser. I've done it before and I'd do it again in a heart-beat. I know that's a bit vigilante like, but living in an unorganized township and trying to rely on the provincial police takes FOREVER. I watched a dog I had became friends with after walking past him every day endure the elements and bark at his owners for attention for months before being unable to take it anymore. I spoke to some friends from out of town and they said they would take care of him so, one sunny july Saturday when my neighbour was out of town, Buddy the golden retriever slipped his collar and "ran away".

I don't think this is a police matter...hopefully, the cops are off catching dangerous criminals. You need to call Animal Protection though...we have the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals (RSPCA)...I'm sure you have something similar. They can investigate a case and seize the animal/s and lay charges if necessary. This can be a court case, fine and gaol term even.

Please don't wait. Ring the animal protection people and speak to them about what you have seen and your fears. Give them the facts only and they will tell you what to do . If you wait, it might be that much longer that the poor animal suffers....just ring them and have a chat. Please.

I have actually called the police to report animal abuse. When I was a teenager, I had a neighbor across the street who left his dog chained outside in all weather and didn't feed her for weeks on end. One day I noticed that I could see her ribs through her fur because she was so skinny, so I decided it was time to end the ordeal. When the neighbor left for work, I went over into his yard and unchained the dog and brought her over to my house. Then we called the police, who sent an animal protection person to come pick the dog up. I never heard whether she found another home, but the guy across the street never got her back.

I WILL CALL THE POLISE RIGHT AWAY. I love pets and I will always be doing good actions to protect them, Once I remember I was 6 years old and I gave my cat a kick with a roll of paper , my mom took the same roll of paper and gave me a kick, I was crying and shouting and calling my dad. Then she made me understand that I am a human being so I could shout and call my dad but the cat does not know how to speak and he does not have anyone else to protect him so he cannot do anything but it does not mean that I can do whatever I want with him. From that day I learnt that we should always be respecting animals because they are hurt just by the way we would be feeling hurt. So my answer to your post is definitely YES. I will call the police to protect the cat or dog.

If I see someone beating an animal with a stick or something else I will surely go and ask him why as I don't like when someone beat an animal. It is better not to have a pet if you think you will not be able to endure the pet's actions. I agree that there are some circumstances when the animal may deserve something bad for example it has been chewing the new shoes you have just bought. But if someone is beating constantly the animal then I will surely intervene even if it is none of my bussiness to interfere in the life of the person, I can interfere to save the life of a pet.

All decent people hate cruelty, or harmful neglect, of any kind. And certainly, when humans are abusive to a creature that cannot defend itself, or even trusts people, the whole thing seems much worse. However, situations aren't always as simple as they seem. I know several people who rescue sick and injured animals ( dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, hedgehogs - even chickens.) When these animals arrive they are sometimes in a terrible state, and need long months of nursing and feeding up before they are well again. In the meantime, people who saw these animals could well think they were being ill-treated, and charge off to report things to the authorities who, unless they already knew the full story, would waste everyone's time making needless visits. Someone cutting off a cat's paws ( yeuk!) is clearly cruel and is also ( or should be!) criminal. But leaving an animal outside in bad weather...? Well, that would all depend on the circumstances. Maybe the animal just escaped? Maybe it actually likes being outside in the rain? My dogs love snow. Animals are not the same as us. I think it is always better to check out the situation fully before taking any action. By all means rescue the animal from immediate danger, if any. Feed it if it seems hungry. But then seek out the owner/carer and see how the land really lies. And if the owner seems to be having difficulties, why not offer to help? I would only say call in the authorities as a last resort, or if there is a real dangerous emergency to be dealt with.

yeah i would definatly tell someone that could help the animal out, and be persistant, cause sometime they dont always come on the first call, i think you should treat your animals like a child, until they get used to your rules, and then they are suppose to be your companion and friend... i dont slap around my friends, there are better ways go about things :P happy my lotting

Yes, I would call the police it I saw animal abuse. It's not oke to let then not eat or mistreat them. I think letting them to fend for them self, is cruel. They should not have gotten an animal if they di dnot want to take care of it or they shoul dplace an add to find a home for them. Where they will be loved and cared for. I have actually taken a cat to take care of it and the owners came looking for it and I told them that I thought it was abandoned and they were like oh no she was lost I was like, ya right my daughter was holding the cat she is 7 yrs old and they said or she likes the cat huh, and my daughter said can I have it and irronically they let her keep him, Mr Boots LOL

I have a neighbour, across the street from me, who has a cat. It's only a small cat, but when she first moved in, it kept attacking, killing and eating birds in my garden, leaving the feathers only. Now, this person has been in the street for just over two years. Her husband has a good job, and babsits the little one whilst the mother goes to work at the pub, in the restaurant. Their cat is put outside all day and every day. I often see him sitting on the window ledge and her completely ignore him, so he's come to sneaking into other people's houses. He's really skinny, poor thing. She does let him in at times, but not often. They went away one weekend, and I kept seeing the cat looking out of first, the sitting room window, then the bedroom, and that went on for almost three days. Was he being fed? Could he get out to do his business? Goodness knows! I haven't reported her yet, but I'm watching. I wouldn't report her to the police, but rather to an animal rescue centre, or the RSPCA. Brightest Blessings.

In a heartbeat. I have in fact called my local humane Society on an owner who had an overcrowding situation with cats. I believe some of the cats were removed. I would call the appropriate authorities for any type of cruelty or abuse. For animals, the Humane Society or Cops. For People, the cops.

Yes, I would consider reporting the person. In our town there is an animal rescue portion of the govt. that I would report to and not the police. I know that is different every where. The way I see it, some people have to decide to be advocates for people and animals who don't have a voice.

Thanks for that tip. Had not thought about animal rescue. They do a really good job. In the other place where we lived, someone called Animal Rescue about some sick kittens (that had been abandoned my their cat mom outdoors) and they came out and took the babies in for medical care. I thought that was nice.

I don't know if I would call the police but I would definately call the RSPCA because as far as I am concerned, it's animal cruelty.

I did actually do this one time. I had a next door neighbour who had a lovely dog, but she did not like having it in the house, she was very house proud. At night times she would lock it in this tiny shed that was in the garden which in itself does not sound too bad but the shed had no windows and when I say tiny I mean it was tiny. Way to small for a dog of the size that the dog was. At first she would leave it just in there over night, but then on a few occasions she would forget about the dog and it would be in there all the next day and then again at night too. It broke my heart knowing she was doing it and so eventually I just made an anonymous phone call and they took the dog off her.

I think it'd all depend. I might feed the animals myself and take them into the house, but I'd make sure the owner knew and was okay with it. I might just feed them and then report it, telling them how long I'd been feeding them and how long I've noticed the neglect. Animal Cruelty is wrong and I'd want to do anything I can to stop the cruelty from happening. I used to be friends with a person who saved a dog from being shot because the owner was going to shoot it.

That's a very admirable thing to do. So many people overlook animal welfare cause they think of them as nothing more than animals. But animals depend on humans for good care. And when the humans let them down, it's nice that someone else would stand in. We domesticated them and made them depend on us, we owe them that, even if we don't own them. Thanks for your comments.
