I think one of the most important things to have when you travel is a cell phone (assuming you're traveling somewhere that has reception). If you get into a bind, you have all the contacts right there and it's easy to get in touch with someone if you really need something. Next to that, I would say to make sure you have contact information for anyone that you might need to get in touch with, especially in the case of an emergency. As funny as it sounds, I don't know my grandparent's cell phone number by heart, even though I call it all the time, so I always carry their number in my phone or in a number book I have just in case. :)

Ofcourse, the travel documents, passport, visa related papers, some photos of oneself, come to my mind first and foremost. Then, things I always make sure I have them are the medicines I never should miss to take. If it is on a business trip, I have to carry all the papers and documents I would need at the places where I am travelling to.
