Do you think zoos are safe?

I have heard many news reports within the past couple of years about animals escaping from zoo exhibits and attacking people...... so I wonder do you think zoos are as safe as they could be? I myself love the zoo and think it plays a vital role in keeping certain species safe, including contributing to research about certain species as well as the beneficial breedings that they have of some of the endangered species. But this love of the animals also makes me think that the exhibits should be checked thoroughly very often to ensure there is no way of possible escape because this not only may save the lives of the visitors and ensure their safety but it also ensures that the animals remain safe.

dear amanda08 you are very right about the safety of the animals being exibited in the zoo. you are also right about the importance of zoos to each and everyone of us. its bad enough to hear reports that endanger the lives of the zoo customers and the animals as well. i just hope the administration of such will make things better for the sake of it.

I agree.... as I mentioned, I do think that they serve an enormous purpose, but I just think maybe there are more precautions that can be taken to ensure not only the people's safety, but the animals as well. I love going to the zoo, it is always fun!! Thanks for the comment... happy mylotting!

I think that good zoos are excellent and very safe unless visitors are very stupid. The animals can't get out, but apparently now zoos need to also be people proofed so that stupid people do not jump in with the animals. Bad zoos unfortunately can do a lot of harm to the animals. I don't know if you've ever seen the show "18 Kids and Counting"? Well, once they did an episode where they went to a horrible zoo and tossed old bagels at all the animals. That's not good animal nutrition!

While I do not go to zoos( I already live in one as I have 2 cats and an old man that had brain injury from a motor cycle accident last year) HEHE, I think that most zoos are pretty safe to go to, most of them do check on the encasement every 2 or 3 months. And no matter what is done to keep these animals in there are no fool proof ways to prevent this from happening. If an animal knows that it can get out it will do its best, most of the time the animals fail in escaping and only rarely does one actually get out. Considering the fact there are so many zoos in the world and only a few manage to escape, I would have to say that a zoo would have to be a safe place to visit.

Oh I agree.. I do think they are ALMOSt as safe as they could be... I think the main thing I was trying to point out was that maybe we could check thei exhibits more often than we do because when the animal escapes and hurts someone they usually put the animal down and I wish that did not have to happen... thanks so much for your comment!!
