Ingrown toenails, what causes them and how can they be prevented

In my 34 years on the planet I think I may have had one ingrown toenail and that one I caught early. I have recently been having some pain with my feet and toes. I groom them regularly though I left it a little longer than usual this last time. Yesterday i had to file and dig out 4 ingrown toenails! What is the cause of this annoying and painful condition? What steps can be taken towards prevention before the fact. I am a dancer, and I spend a lot of time on my toes in 7 inch high heels. I have been doing this for a long time and never before have I had any issues with my feet. Any advice or help that you could give me towards this topic would be greatly appreciated!

I think I've had one or two ingrown toenails and I believe they were caused by cutting my toenails too short, especially in the corners where the nail meets the skin. I don't know what exactly causes them but that's what happened when I got them. The best thing I can suggest, other than ask a doctor, is be careful to cut the nails short but not too short and don't cut really deep where the nail meets the skin.
