I had a bad experience about 3 years ago with a dentist. He told me I had five cavities, which was bad. When he was working on them he said "Oh this looked like a cavity on the x-ray, but its just a filling, he said the same thing on four of the five cavities. Now I'm scared of dentists, and haven't been back since. Today I have an appointment with a different dentist and I'm terrified. I was never scared of the dentist as a child, but now, I don't want to go! Are you afraid of the Dentist?

No, I really am not afraid of dentists. I have had 4 children all born by cessarean section so I guess that is why I am really not that frightened of dentists. When you compare it to something like that I guess it pales in comparison. Good luck with the dentist today though. I hope it all works out well for you. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

My son was also born by cessarean, and it is very difficult. My body had a very hard time recovering and I suffered many infections, but the payoff was a beautiful baby boy. Its hard to see what makes the dentist worth the pain.

Hi glords - I absolutely LOVE my dentist! He is the ONLY one for me. He is handsome, charming, & the best dentist I've ever had in my entire life! Ok, he is ALSO my husband! :) Sorry about your horrible experience with your prior dentist glords. He sounds very undereducated to make such a mistake. I have never had any problems like that before. I'm sure your new dentist will be ok. Let me know how it goes. Jill

Sorry that the dentist you initially saw was from outside of the U.S. and that he did wrong by you glords. The only reason I usually prefer doctors/dentists that are from the U.S. is because sometimes I have trouble understanding their English. But... please do not write off foreign dentists or doctors because, you might not know this but, they have much more schooling and training. I know because my husband, the dentist, is from Jordan. He got his FIRST dental degree in Jordan and had to go to school just as long as dentists here in the United States. He graduated & practiced there for a few years and then moved here. A foreign trained dentist or doctor can NOT practice in the U.S. They have to go back to school AGAIN! There are specific programs for international students. At most dental schools that have international programs the requirement is an ADDITIONAL 3 years of dental school. My husband went to the University of the Pacific in San Francisco, CA which has an accelerated and highly concentrated program which is 2 years long. I understand your concerns glords and your experience influenced that a lot. But, please do not completely write off doctors & dentists that are from other countries. By the way, my husband was valedictorian of his class. Jill

yes this dentist seemed to know which teeth had fillings in them, he pointed them out. My last dentist I choose only because his dental office was the close to my job and I wanted to get back to work quickly. I think he was educated in another country. I think he was from India, and after that experience I wont trust anyone who was educated outside of the US.

Hate is such a strong word but in the case of how I felt about my dentist I would say it's the best choice of words. I always had a nightmare at the dentist office and avoided it as much as possible. Even when I had to have two root canals done he managed to almost kill me and I felt like strapping him to the chair and having a go at his mouth. That was 30 years ago but today I go to the dentist and even though fear wells up inside me I manage to tell myself it's much better now than then and it is much better. Now I can say that I don't like the dentist chair but I no longer actually hate the dentist.

Okay... I will brace myself by "telling myself it's much better now than then," but if its not I'm going to cry.

I am sure that even though it was 30 years ago my finger impressions are still in the arm rests I was squeezing them so hard.

Iv'e been to the desntist today and i have appointments every tuesday. I think i'm getting used to them. i was afraid of their injections and drills. My dentist said i need to have root canal for two of my molars. Good thing they have images up their ceiling, i keep getting distracted from the pain. anyway, there's anesthesia so i feel comfortable:)

For me it is the other way around. As a child I was terrified of dentists. Now I handle it much better. PS: Lord almighty! That does not mean I want to visit the dentist. The dentist I see now does a fine job and does it with ease.He is a very capable doctor. As a child I used to visit a dentist who yelled at me and was super scary. For crying out loud, I was only 5-6!! I was already scared of him, and then he yelled at me which made things worse. So that is my story. Happy myLotting!

Oh yea, I am also scared of dentist. Well, not the dentist actually but the injections. I don't like the needles. the injection doesn't really hurt bad but just to think about that needele? it makes me feel nervous. I had bad experiences also about going to the dentist that I why I am scared.

I have the same fear of needles, but since they bring relief from pain they are my friends. I was so scared to get the epidural when I was having a baby, but it was worth it, I wish that I could just live my entire life with an epidural in my back. That was heaven. Once they took it out I was in hell though.

I hate everything there is to do with the dentist. I always have and I always will. I even hate cleanings.

Yes I thought the cleaning was quit painful as well. I felt like they were cutting into my gums for at least half an hour. I think I cried a little. Is that strange, or do lots of people experience pain during cleanings.

I don't like the dentist too... I have just went to the dentist for the second time in this year last week. I went to the dentist 3 three agos to do the X-ray and first cleaning, it was awful... not because ofthe dentist not doing the right job but because I haven't been to the dentist for almost 2 years, my teeth gum is drty and there are lots of crap in the gap and underneath... Althought he put on the numgel on my gum, I still hurt... I hate feeling his keeps scrapying my teeth and the Zzizzizizii sound from the tools... those sound so scary to me... Last week when I went for the second time, he told me I'm gonna to have it fixed, have that drilled... I'm so scared :-( :'( I don't want to go either!!!!

yes that is how it was for me as well because I hadn't been in 3 years. I never went back after my bad experience and now I had to pay the price for neglecting to go. It was painful.

Hello glords , no I am not afraid of the dentist. As a matter of fact I need to making an appointment for teeth cleaning and a dental check up. I try to get my teeth checked and cleaned every 6 months. I had braces on my teeth when I was in jr high school and had to wear braces for 2 1/2 years so I know what pain feels like when it comes to mouth pain.

ah I had braces when I was in jr high as well. Its not really the pain that Im afraid of, its that they will make a mistake and leave me worse off than I was to begin with... the pain also doesn't help.

I'm not afraid of the Dentist, but I just hate going. I hate having to keep up my teeth...I don't understand why we were created with somethings that fall apart so easily. There is nothing more unappealing then to have someone's hands in my mouth. Why doesn't our brushing and flossing take care of them ? Why do we have to pay someone else to take care of our teeth. It never made sense to me. I would rather have false teeth, then having to continue to go to the dentist.

Yucky I hate the idea of dentures as much as i hate the idea of dentists. Something about false teeth grosses me out.

Hi Glords, I was afraid when I was young, but nowadays I only get this fear when he tells me I got a problem. I'll be cool and calm till the x-ray and stuff but when he brings the injection, oh, I can't imagine my fear! Somehow, I bring all the courage I have to stay calm and let the dentist do his job. Yes, it's terrifying experience each time!

What a coincidence! I just went to the dentist today and by GOD it was painful. He told me that my bottom teeth were bigger than my upper ones and so he got this small electrical metal file and... without any anesthesia he just started filing my teeth. I had to grab on to the chair and squeeze as hard as I could. Besides that, I've never had any "bad" experiences.
@glords (2614)

Oh no, I would have told him that I like it that way. I can't imagine someone just filing my teeth down like that. That is an interesting coincidence that the day you had a bad experience is the day someone asks you if you hate the dentist. You have a much more upbeat personality then mine, I would have said some really mean things about my dentist if I'd just gone through that, and the floor was open for venting.

A mistake by one dentist is not a mistake for all. I am not afraid with these dentists. They are there to serve and as human beings working with some machines, there is always an occurrence of error. Not all of them will do the same thing. Meeting your dentist is the most noble thing to do now.

Okay... I'll try to keep that attitude. I did go through with the appointment, and so far so good. Of course today was just a cleaning and some x-rays. The true test will be what happens at our next meeting. I just need to keep up the nerve to go through with it. He said I have 4 cavities. Yikes!
