Can't stay on a diet!!

I can do really well for about a month or two on a diet, but then after I lose about 20 pounds, I am so sick of being on the diet that I start telling myself I can have this or that food that I really shouldn't and before I know it I have done that for several days and pretty much gained back the 20 pounds I have lost. It doesn't help that I live in a household of very picky eaters and of course they are all thin wouldn't you know. There are things in the house that they like, but I shouldn't have. I have tried to change my lifestyle and eat mostly whole foods. I also don't deprive myself of things I like, but try to limit them to occasionally, but I still seem to let it snowball until I have undone all of my hard work. I also have a heart condition that limits my exercise. The heart condition is not caused by being overweight, but by a defect. When I start to exercise and my heart rate goes up, it goes into this crazy fast beat. It is diagnosed as inappropriate sinus tachycardia. Anyway, I am limited in my ability to exercise. I can't take diet pills, suppressants, metabolism pills or even slimfast or any food that contains high energy ingredients, because this gets my heart out of rhythm as well. What about you? Does anyone else have this problem or any advice?

I already have an extremely happy life. I spend all of my days loving & caring for my family that God has given me and volunteering in my community. However, I am not as healthy as I could be. That is the reason I would like to lose weight. If I can lose weight in a healthy manner, I could make sure that I am doing all I can to take care of myself as well so that the people who need and love me will have me around as long as my Heavenly Father will allow. I do not desire to lose weight for appearances, but for health reasons. I am not annoyed in the least, just wondering if anyone else has had some of the obstacles and if they could offer any advice. I live a very fulfilled and joyous life with God, my husband, my children, my church, and my friends and family. You are exactly right that those are what make life worth living. My body is a temple to the Lord and I want to make sure it is healthy so I can go on serving him and others. :)

Oh, and I don't think it is petty for me to want to be able to be my healthiest and be able to serve others and my family at my utmost potential!

Unfortunately you sound a little like me. It's all head stuff! You sound like you have an addictive personality of sorts. I do, one minute I get takeaway every other night, then next minute I'm all out health kick and lose loads of weight, then I see something in a restaurant or on telly and I'm back to the rubbish again. I hate it and really wish I could get my head around everything. I have a qual in nutrition so know what I should and shouldn't be doing and eating but its difficult when you know what crap is available in the shops x

I completely agree. I have never taking diet pills, or supplements, or anything like that, because I knew beforehand that they wouldn't be safe. It is not worth it to me to harm myself. I don't starve myself either, because I have four children to be a good example to and to care for. Thanks.

Hi, this is what I do. Whenever I'm on a diet, I cheat when I feel like it. For example let's say I'm on a veggie diet and I crave for a scrambled egg. I'll go for it in a little portion t ostop the cravings! To reduce my solid food, I take 2-3 glass of water before my meals. That way, I don't feel much hungry and I'll take less solid food! You can also try scrambled egg white with spinach! Very healthy and follow this diet thrice a week! Why don't you try this, in the long run, you'll loose your unwanted weight.

I too am terrible at keeping on a diet. Because I love food so much, I keep choosing to exercise instead however I keep up for a week then stop. I have found in the past that the funnest, easiest way for myself to lose weight has been dancing however doing this and other exercising (such as using a Wii Fit too) in the summer proves too difficult for me as I become very uncomfortably sweaty. I can cool down in a nice cool bath but the fact is I just hate making myself like that. The good thing about summers though is that I can eat a lot of salads which of course are healthy meals and often low in calories. Good luck with the dieting!

For me..It's all about motivation and dedication. We all have those times where we binge eat or somehow screw up our daily diet, and it ALWAYS starts that snow-ball effect. I think you should just try to practice self-discipline (it's hard..But we all have to do it if we want to be successful) and just get back on the wagon. Diets are definitely hard to stay on, there's no doubt about that. Luckily diet pills don't do anything for losing weight anyway, so don't worry - you aren't missing out. Those pills are bad news - and even those of us who "can" take them SHOULDN'T. And the same goes for those slim fasts..They're pure sugar and carbs! And who needs that when we're trying to cut back? A big motivational tip that I have is to find a diet buddy or get your husband/boyfriend/friend (whoever) to walk with you or do some kind of low-impact workout with you on a daily basis; and get into a routine.

that is why people say it is highly difficult to reduce weight...once youve reduced considerable amount of weight you are tend to eat more food than usual..that makes you to add some more weight...so the best advice is that never loose weight rigorously...reduce it with patience...make your diet is such a way that it get accoustomed to your body...gradual decrease in your intake and increase in your workout will improve a lot... have a healthy life...happy mylotting

Thanks for your response. The bars do sound pricey. Not sure if I can eat them, though, especially if they have energy ingredients or caffiene. I do enjoy swimming and it is one exercise that doesn't cause my heart to race.

I don't do well with diet - I love to eat too much. So i run. But when I get sick - i take a couple of days off and that's never good for someone who doesn't diet. Maybe you can walk? Ask your kids to walk with you - not too brisk, just you know to get you off the couch and all. And since you can't do brisk walks - maybe you should walk for about an hour or so? An hour is probably not something that you just have sitting around. I'm sure you're a busy person.

Thanks. You are right. I am a very busy person. I am the mommy of 4 children. I homeschool them, take them to all of their extra curricular activities and groups outside of our home, work at home and run a small business part time, very active and volunteer at church. I don't spend much time on the couch. Actually, the only time I sit on the couch is in the evening when our family spends time together reading our Bible and devotions. The rest of the day I go, go, go. I have done brisk walks, and walked to a walking video in our home, and those are brisk, and those have caused my heart to get too fast, so I stopped them. Maybe I will try slow walking outside. Thanks!

First my advise to you is keep your discipline up and patience. second i too are on a diet once, i did work out and eat less food but nutritious ones. but its never easy to do this and sometimes realize to work on this everyday of your life until forever. i can never imagine especially time is rapidly changing. so in a time being i eventually left the diet process and gain wait double as before. but i also realize that though gaining weight has and advantage, there is also disadvantages and it more visible so i decided to lose wait and like i said discipline up and patience. it works.

i'm rubbish at keeping to diets, but i know tricking your stomach is good e.g. if you stick to the same diet for a month and as you said you get sick of it and you prob find that the amount you lose slows or you just stay same weight so you should on the weekend forget the diet and eat whatever you what all day because then start your diet after the weekend it kick starts brain again into thinking it on a health kick again and you start to lose weight again. i lost 2lb in 2 days by not even trying, because i just did some house cleaning and at the end of the day i felt as if i had hit the gym...that was by exercise done which wasn't strenous while doing it and also because i was busy i didn't spend the day sitting on the sofa eating lots of snacks between meals
