Has anyone watched The Hobbit cartoon from 1977?

The Hobbit Animated Movie 1977 Rankin Bass - This is one of my favourite animated movies of all time. Sure it is not as well made as the Disney/Pixar movies that are out now but you have to remember that this was made over 30 years ago. Another reason that I like it so much is that they really tried to stick to the original story of The Hobbit as much as possible. Some movies are totally different from the novels they are based on. Rankin Bass did a really good job keeping to Tolkien's original story.

I love this cartoon version of JRR Tolkien's novel, The Hobbit. It was made by Rankin Bass and it tells the story of how Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit, went on a journey with 13 dwarves and a wizard all the way to the Lonely Mountain to seek revenge on the dragon Smaug and get back the dwarves' gold and treasures. The Hobbit is one of my favourite books and this is one of my favourite animated movies. Of course if they were to make an animated Hobbit now, I am sure they could do a much better job of it, but this one was done quite nicely for 1977. You can watch it on VHS or DVD and there is even someone who has posted it on youtube.com to watch for free.

No, I think that's the one I haven't seen yet. I've seen Bakshis LOTR and another animation, but no Rankin Bass yet.

My fiance loves stuff like that and guess what this past weekend he talked me into watching it. Its odd you started this discussion right after i watched this. I didn't like it. Maybe if i was a child but it reminded me of the smurfs. I think when the movie comes out though that will like that more.
