How Soon Do You Shop For A Holiday?

Canada

It can be any holiday. Canada Day is coming up on July 1st, and the 4th Of July is on July 4th, obviously. I'm Canadian, and my husband's American. I went and got some stuff for Canada Day last week, and I ordered a really nice scarf with stars and stripes on it for the 4th of July. I had to order that about 3 weeks ago, to ensure that it got here on time, and it did. So when you shop for a specific holiday, how far in advance do you start your shopping?

I usually shop about a week before. When my mom was alive and I truly celebrated Christmas and Hanukkah, I would give out my gift list the day after Thanksgiving. That way there was time.Toward the end I had to window shop to find what to put on the list.

I shop for the holiday as soon as the items become available and I see it in the store most usually. I do not like to wait until the last minute or make a special trip for it. I like to shop early and be prepared also.

To be honest with you I rarely ever shop for any particular holiday except for Christmas since my kids are already big. For Christmas I just shop for gifts and cards.

I'm the kind of person who shop at the last minute. I seem to be so busy on holidays and had to do stuff before the shopping. Not only on holidays but also when there is an important event with the whole family.

I tend to make gifts, and generally I start making them in the spring for Christmas. This year I've been busy with a 50th wedding anniversery gift for my roomie's folks who will need it by Oct 31st. I need to get to work on it!

I buy my family new shirts every year for the 4th of July. I usually will pick them up when they first come out otherwise by the time I think about getting them they are all picked over. For Christmas, I start shopping very early. As soon as I get some extra money, I shop. I try to buy things all year long and then when Christmas gets here I am usually close to being done with my shopping.

I'm a terrible procrastinator, so I am usually out there at the last minute getting whatever it is that I want. But I don't usually buy for ALL the holidays. I usually buy some little "goodie" bags for the ladies I bowl with around the holidays that are happening during bowling season and I have already started Christmas shopping. That is because I buy for so many and when I see things, I just buy them and stash them. But I will still be out there a day or 2 before Christmas, finishing up.

I used to start my christmas shopping in July. Last few years.. around November as the kids are grown and what they wanted that I could afford was normal stuff. But I was just told that they don't want to do gifts for adults this year.. only the kids. They say it is cause of their budgets, but really it is cause we are all older now and pretty much havewhat we need nad the little things.. if they want it they will go buy it when they want it! Not sure how I feel about it... I am not hard to buy for, but they think I am. My problem is I just don't want things.. in my lifetime, I never got anything I ever wanted so I just stopped wanting. Was easier to deal with it if I didn't want and didn't get, but when I wanted and didn't get.. it was dissapointing. My (now adult) kids don't understand that as they got alot of what they wanted, they weren't spoiled and money was tight but I was able to make certian things happen for them with my savings and coupons and things like that to save and get things cheaper. Often off brands over name brands, but the item was the same. And now, the grand kids have so much between the parents that it is hard to buy for them....so I dont know what I will do this year. I see that the toys and athings I got them last year are hardly played with if even remembered so I am not going to do that again!

Minor holidays like Mother's and Father's Day or birthdays I try to do it two weeks in advance. Major holidays like Christmas at least 1 month in advance.

I normally start planning my holiday as far in advance as possible so that once booked I can relax and stuff. However I am planning to go away wih my mum this September and haven't booked yet but, only because I am booking through my own place of work (I work in travel) and cannot book until inside of 8 weeks until the departur date! It is really frustrating for somebody organised like me but, no much I can do really! lol x
