is it annoying to you?

When read posts, be it a discussion on Mylot being started or one being replied to, i have noticed that people more so than when i first started with the site use chat text. example of this is What 2 j/k's can make your bbf rofl? The question is...does this annoy you as much as it does me. I mean honestly...i want to read whats on a persons mind and make an intelligent reply, not sit down and decipher code before i can start thinking about a reply. If i wanted to do that i would have worked hard and got in with the FBI or CIA. Whats your thoughts on this?

Yes, this is one of my pet gripes. I tend to ignore posts that use texting expressions a lot. I think that if they are to lazy to write properly, then I can't be bothered to try and decipher whatever it is they are trying to say. I know that this view is shared by a lot of other people here as well. So, all you texters out there in MyLot land, if you want to get your comments read, write them using full proper words

Hey there, haven't seen you on Yuwie much lately. Yep it annoys me. I don't mind a few well known abbreviations such as imho and idk, but if the entire response is written like that it drives me nuts. Especially when they mix lowercase and uppercase, which makes it SO hard to read.

See what I mean? What does imho mean? I guess I am just an old fogey. I don't test, don't even have a cell phone...boy, I am out of date.

I don't like it on here and it is not English. When I see users who are writing using it I advise them not to as the Guidelines tell us to use English. A quality post would not contain text language as it would not be picked up by search engines but if they are happy using it, and earning less, it's their choice. I will only use it where it is allowed, not here.

I don't like them either, if it is not too much of those code words, I will read and post my responses, if it doesn't even make sense, I will just skip it... I have received couple those types of responses in my dicussions, I didn't understand dsome of them at all... I would rather looking at the mistakes spelling instead of those code.

I mind it a tad bit but there are some of the abbreviations that I don't mind at all. Things like lol or b/c are used a ton in short hand and some people are just a lot use of writing in short hand because of their professions. For me sometimes I'll see myself going back to a few because when I'm in class and listening to lectures I need to be quick at writing and so therefore there are certain things I use that to me are completely easy to understand whereas others its not. The ones that annoy me are the sum, cuz, etc. because it all seriousness its just teenage language that doesn't need to be on mylot or on anything.

I have to admit that I am guilty of using 'lol' a lot. The other acronyms I do not know as well so I do not use them. And it is annoying to not know what is being said or have to try to figure it out. I read an article somewhere that said teachers in schools are seeing this in written work turned in to them. I also remember the controversy about the standard English language being changed from within...by colloquelisms (sp?) and 'ghetto speak' being used so much in literature and media. What are you thoughts on the overall effect of internet chat keeping people illiterate on proper standard use of language?

no, not really. I really don't use it myself but I also don't mind others using it if they are comfortable with it. It's really not that hard to understand or 'decipher' it simple shortcuts to long texts so I guess all is okay with it. although it would be nice to see words spelled correctly and sentences that are grammatically correct once in a while ^_^

it doesn't bother me short txt code, see i just did it there but its because i text alot so i automatically go for a particular letter, i never use this kind of langauge for formal things because that would be frowned upon. The only type of shorthand that annoys me is when my friend who is black types how he talks if you know what i mean and i have to ask him to repeat what he says

The only chat text I use, or that I am aware of that I use is lol. I do throw in an lol every once in awhile but try not to make it so often that my entire post is me laughing. Honestly, laughing is great, but I don't laugh that much, lol.
