How many regret ever trying to post an objective opinion in certain discussions?

I am sorry if this offends anyone who is deeply religious that is not the point of this post please read my whole discussion before you respond, i am all for people defending their religion and cultures on this site and there are a lot of people posting comments trying to dispell myths about certain cultures and religions because we do have users from everywhere and sometimes i respond in support of them trying to dispel beleifs inflamed by the media ideas only to find myself getting flamed left and right. unfortunately there are many conversations i will avoid from now on because of this and i do always try to give thoughtful feedback.i am refferring to those who start the conversations using religion as there backbone and use premises of their religion to putdown and flame people, those who are obviously not there to respond objectively and try to keep an interesting conversation going, but to respond in a derogatory manner to anyone who doesnt agree with everything they say, and oh my goodness what if you say something that actually makes sense and makes their argument look weaker then your really gonna get it. I do think its a good place for people to explain their religions and use them in discussions but not to put people down or mudsling and i know many people are doiong so, good for you i repeat im not talking about religious people in general but those clearly using this site only to promote their religion and put down anyone who doesnt agree with them. if youve had a similar experience please respond but without naming the specific religion as i dont want to be doing the very thing im speaking out agains and presenting a distorted image of any one religion because it seems to me this type of thing happens among all religions

You're right that mylot should not be used as a place to run people down, verbally abuse them, or attack them because of your own beliefs. If we use it right, mylot can be a place where all of us learn from each other and promote friendship all over the world. I just love being able to discuss things with people all over the world for the first time in my life.

thank you for posting a postitive comment, i did write this when i was a little bitter and upset about some comments in a discussion (and i played my part as well, i should have just stopped responding completely when things started to get nasty) and i was worried that this discussion was only going to bring more negativity so thanks for pointing out some positives as well. and lesson learned for me to make sure next time if im upset about something that was said to take a break and a few deep breaths and get some perspective

I agree with you 100%! I think it's wonderful to be able to discuss serious and thought provoking things with many other people, but in a peaceful and always respectable manner. Obnoxiousness just makes others think that religion and religious discussion should be banned, which of course is against freedom, and is actually a prejudism. But unfortunately sometimes, it's any obnoxiousness that gets noticed, and not all the good and bridge making that goes on. Even those who only want to communicate their own faith, because they believe it to be the only path, you can do this much better if there is established some common ground first! I have never, ever understood how saying to someone, "you're wrong and I'm right" could ever be thought of as possibly working! All religions were begun from a profound reason, so surely there is common ground!

I dont know why people have to start convos like that...religion and violence should b kept off this site...and if u have an opinion...its YOUR opinion..and not everyone elses...people should see that and respect it!...I'm more likely to answer a question asking if i have hair on my back...than why i do or dont own a bible.

i agree that violence is another thing that should be kept off this site and unfortunatly a great number of the religious conversations may be leading people down that path. Angry people arent thinking clearly and these discussions are making and keeping people angry.

Well said! that is why sometimes, i believe that we should not discuss about 'religions', if it's going to turn nasty and argumentative. i do start a discussion on 'if God appears to you....', but when i put God there, i meant it very generally, im referring to the God of our own belief. like you, i prefer to stay out of anything that talks about religion now, i mean, i will answer that i'm a catholic when being asked, but i refused to comment further.

thank you for responding, i try to put God in general terms as well because i dont necessarily know the religion of the person im speaking to and also this can keep an insightful discussion going and allow me to participate whithout offending anyone
