New law passed! No more texting while driving allowed.

They just passed a new law here in which someone texting while driving can get a ticket for $50 or even charged with wreckless driving. A lot of people text while driving and I was wondering what you thought about this new law. Do you wish you had it in your place of residence or do you have a law like this already? I think it's a pretty good one..how about you?

There is nothing that inspires me more than knowing there is a chance that the driver coming straight toward me is texting. What took them so long to make the law and I hope it's good all over the US. Doing anything but driving is utter foolishness and the odds are going to catch up with you sooner or later and I don't want to be anywhere near you when they do.

Well said savypat! I don't think it is a nationwide law yet. It's just a state passesd law. We rank very highly in the national average of teen driving deaths. I'm glad they passed it. It may not do as much as I would like for it to in the way of stopping it but it's a start.

I'm from NJ and I believe that this law passed about 1 yr ago if i'm not mistaken. I am actually glad this has passed because when driving, we all need to pay full attention to the road when driving. I think it's impossible to pay attention to your phone and to the road at the same time as something can happen in a split second and you need to react appropriately.

Hi Glow! I agree. Accidents can happen very quickly. Texting does take alot of needed attention away from what's important. Thanks for the response.

I think texting while driving is pretty dumb, I mean, how are your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel when you are texting? I can see allowing phone calls long before texting!

I agree ElicBxn! I would never attempt to text while I was driving. I don't do much of that anyway. Do you have this law already where you are?

Oh yeah! I wish we have it here in Ph. Thing is, if theres one, the penalty is not that much, so drivers wont make a big issue about it knowing they can always get a away with it. I had this big arguement with this driver where im riding with the van for hire and im sitting in the front seat and he keeps texting while driving. I told him to stop but he didnt listen. I didnt stop ranting at him to the point that i told him, "if something bad happens, are you insured because i am!!" That made him stop texting until we get to our destination. i just hope he learns his lesson and wont do it again.

It is so dangerous. We have a high rate of teen accidents here and they say it is mostly due to texting while they drive. To me it's just plain dangerous to do so. I hope he learned his lesson too. Thanks for responding.

Hi missybear! I would worry about where their attention is too. They can't possibly be aware of their surroundings while they are texting. Thanks for responding.

hi jenin. no law no system here in assam( india). u will be surprised hearing it that there is no need to have sufficient knowledge to get a driving licence. u can get it without a test but u have to pay a little more to authority. this is the main cause of maximum road accidents of my area.

Not sure we have a law like that, we're next door to ya. In NC. I don't really pay attention to those laws because I don't know how to drive. More scared to learn then anything I guess, lol.

I think it is a great thing to do. I think u shouldn't be allowed to text or even talk on a cell phone while u are driving. it's way too dangerous but u sure see alot of people doing it. U need to concentrate on your driving & nothing else in my opinion.

There was someone who was killed here (2 people, the driver texting and the other (who was pregnant, just driving). Who the HE## is stupid enough to text while driving?!!!!!! How stupid can you be? I am sorry, the fact they HAVE to make a rule, that proves who stupid and selfish these people are. In Dallas, a bus driver was texting, ran into a semi (his last words being "Oh SH_T!" and killed the entire bus load of people. A train in Los Angeles, in Sept. had 37 people killed because the train operator was texting while operating the train. It took 3 days to clean it up. So, $50 is nothing, no a real deterrent. In Virginia it a $250 fine and 2 points on your license. It has been outlawed in New York for over a year. So, yes it IS a good law but I wonder how well it will be policed. I am in Virginia, right now, just outside of D.C., with family, and my sister-in-law told me that they had them lined up on the one road, pulling over one after the other. $50 will not deter these idiots!

Your right..$50 is not much of price to pay. I like the wreckless driving option though it won't be used unless there is a wreck or something. As far as policing..they said they probably would not be pulling someone over for just that cause..the same as it was for seatbelts here at first. Now they will pull you over just for seatbelts and the fines have been raised as well. Hopefully they will jack up the consequences if they see it won't work. Thanks for the response.

Well that will be nice since really it is a danger texting while driving. Even with the so-called hands-free phones nowadays could still post a risk on the life of the motorists. When you talk at the same time drive, your focus on the street will be split by having to talk with someone at the same time. And that act is simply not advisable.

Your right about the hands free phones making it easier. I'm at ease more with talking than texting. Talking without the handfree is just as dangerous though. Thanks for the input.

I think it's a pretty good law. But depends on what state your living in. I mean if it's a small state like South Dakota or Iowa who cares right. They're just going to drive into a ditch. But if its a busy state like mine in colorado where denver traffic is just retarded i think it is a very good law to pass. I do see it a lot around in traffic too. I guess we'll see.

Hi dookie! I see what your saying about the location. It could make a difference. I don't live in a hugely populated state like yours but..our teen driving deaths rank in the top 5 I think. That's why they passed the law. Thanks for responding.

Ya this is good that your government has passed this rule, because those people who text during driving are not good for nothing and also not good for others also. So I think these persons should be punished. Because of these people others also suffer. They divert there mind from driving and kill or harm other people, so this rule is good for those drivers and also good for others. Ya there is a kind of rule in my country in India, It is that you will be fined if you use mobile phone while driving.

I think that it's well over due for that and hopefully they'll pass a law in my hometown. Not too long ago I was driving and this lady who was next to me was texting and she didn't realize that she was closing in on my and was not to far from hitting me. I had to push on my brakes to slow down before she hit me. Crazy people just don't realize that they're putting other and themselves in danger.

Absolutely, I agree! I have a son in drivers ed and if he ever does that, he won't get his license until he turns 18. It's an irresponsible action. All states should have that law. Technology is going to get better, so what would be next to distract drivers.

My daughter is 15 and I feel the same as you do about it. I have no problem with the thought of having her wait until she's 18 for a license. I think 15 and 16 is a little young anyway to drive alone. Thanks for the input.

I think if you are going to ban texting or cell phone use in vehicles you must ban everything else. There are the ones that are reading a map on where they are going or reading the morning paper. The ones that are doing their hair and makeup while driving. The ones that are smoking, drinking their coffee or having a bite to eat while they are driving. What about the ones that are talking on their CB radios or walkie talkies because of their jobs. All of this distracts you and you can't just blame it on texting. I do text while I drive and I have never had anyone honk a horn or flip me off. I pay attention to what I'm doing and I am able to multi task while driving. Oh another one popped in my head. The old famous car stereo. You hear a song that you haven't heard in a long time and you start getting into the groove. Your stopped at a light and the ole famous honk behind you. Or your rocking out while driving and swerve into the next lane. If they are going to ban texting ban everything then.

Some people don't need two hands to text. I am one of them and I have no problem with typing with one hand and not looking at the screen. I am well aware of the people around me driving as well. And I can say honestly that they shouldn't even be on the road because they are just plain out bad drivers. And they aren't even doing anything.

Hi nicholejade! I do understand what your saying. Other things can take your attention off the road as well. I think they are just thinking of things that require both hands and constant attention while trying to operate a vehicle. Do you have to use both hands when you text? Do you have to look at the screen constantly to see what your writing? My daughter can text without looking..lol..She's not driving though. Thanks for the input.

Hey Jen! I can't believe that anyone would be that stupid to even try to text while driving! How the hell can you do that anyway? You need both hands to text! I don't even want to think that someone would be texting and looking at the keyboard and try to be driving! That is virtually an impossible thing to do! You would have to totally look away from the situation of where you are driving! Oh my phucking God! That is a definite accident in the making!

dont text while driving - dont text, drive, accident
Yes thats very good idea to have it kind of laws in the country. Here in my place still not heard about it yet. But it really have in the guidelines that when you drive avoid texting. It can cause divers to accident. So I think people were oblige to follow it for that is there own good and safety.

Here in my province, Newfoundland, Canada, the law has been in place for about two years. There have been fines handed out for those caught. I believe it is needed because it has been proven that a driver is distracted and accidents have happened. Every now and then I still see a driver using their cell so for some they haven't gotten the message, I hope no one suffers because of their actions.

Hi rdadey! My state is sometimes a little late with passing certain laws. Some of the ones around me are even slower..lol..I do think that texting while driving is very dangerous. Especially when the drivers are teens with little experience anyway. Thanks for the input.
