We were sharing a bottle of wine the other night and had this odd discussion. In the end, no one could agree. So, I'm here to ask myLotters, who is the most popular person in the world?

Micheal Jackson is right now. I think who ever is in the news at the time.

I am tending to agree with the Michael Jackson vote. It is funny how precarious popularity is.

I was thinking about this last nite marianna45. How we are focused when people die. Celebrities, athletes. Yet, in 500 years who will remember them? Will they be but a small footnote in some dusty textbook? Thank you for your input marianna45.

Well, it's hard to tell if we can only choose one. One can tell you different names. It depends on many things, really. Geographical location, ages, level of education, interest and many other things can play an important factor. But in general it's almost impossible to tell only one person. I know the words "the most" can literally refer to a single thing but "the most" can also refer to more than one thing. So, if you questioned your friends who the most popular people in the world were, I guess you would not have gone through a situation when no one could agree.

Very true candramawa. Some arguments were, "But what of villages that have no TV?" Essentially trying to figure out, whom, everyone in the world would have heard of. I could not even find one person. We did narrow it down to a handful of living and deceased, but...not one single person. Yet. Thank you candramawa for your thoughtful input.

popularity exsists when the man is industrious and not sure of his fate.. i think Bill Gates ia a popular man because of his works and industry..

I'd say, at this very moment in time, it's Michael Jackson!

How true cheekysuze! Seems he is all over the news every moment of every day. And this time it isn't for allegations made against him.

This might sound odd but I'd say Jesus or God... There is not one single person who doesn't know them.
