Having children is a tough job indeed (you should ask *my* parents) and I believe we have different paradigms as to the best way to raise them. What would be 5 basic rules that you'd like them to follow, or what ideals would you wish to impart? These are my 5: 1. Be a jack-of-all trades but a master of one 2. Tolerate ambiguity but always nurture your ideals 3. Remember the past, enjoy the present, respect the future 4. There will always be time for the things you want to do 5. Always find ways to stretch a little beyond your competence

I really like your #3, but I think I would switch it around to "Respect the past, Enjoy the present, remember the future." I have seen so many teenagers today that have absolutely no respect for anything or anybody made before the 1980s. And you always need to remember the future when it comes to the repercussions of your actions. I think my other rules would be: 2) If you really want something, you have to work for it. 3) Learn all that you can--you never know when that knowledge might come in handy. 4) Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. 5) Always pay back your debts quickly, and avoid going into debt whenever possible.

Agree on you're no. 3; Life is experienced in full whenever you give things a try. (with certain moral limitation of course!) I'd really want my children to be critical thinkers, and to always have compelling reasons for whatever they will decide on. Which reminds me, Teach Your Kid to Argue [http://www.figarospeech.com/teach-a-kid-to-argue/] is a good article about it.
