What is the popular hour to eat out at night in your area?

Yesterday was a hot one. Around 10pm the outside tavernas began to fill with people sitting down to eat dinner and enjoy the relative cool after the stifling heat of the day. In summer 10pm is the time the Greeks go out to eat, though the tourists tend to eat much earlier. What about in your area, what time would the restaurants begin to be busy?

In here, eating places gets busy at night from 8pm to 11pm. And diners are always full, thus my family often dines in our house with either me or my husband doing the cooking whoever of us comes first in the house. But there are times, we just ordered some dinner and have it delivered though.

Well SummerChick, unless you live in the village centre no one actually has a house number or address here and there are lots of very complicated winding roads that look no more than dirt tracks which lead to houses, which makes it pretty difficult to explain where you want your takeout delivered to. I'd say it would be pretty bashed up due to the roads, and stone cold, before it ever arrived!

Here in Australia, people finish work between 4-6pm, so people start going out after 6pm. The busiest time for restaurants are 7-8pm, and start to get quiet after 9pm. Then bars & taverns have their busy time usually around 9-11pm, then after that, night clubs kicks in from around 11pm, and will be packed up until 1-2am when some people get too drunk to stay :P

Hi ausgc, 7pm is definitely very early for people to go out to eat but it sounds as if the people go to eat directly after work. Here the siesta hour is in the afternoon and people go back to work in the evenings, usually from about 6 - 9 pm.

Afternoon tea, cucumber sandwiches I presume, very English. Siestas are an integral part of Greek life, precious hours. Woe betide anyone ignorant enough to telephone during siesta hour. Course not everyone gets one as the tavernas and cafenions are open all day so they have to slave in the heat. I used to think going out to eat at 10 earliest was a bit odd but it makes sense to wait until it's cooled down. We stay on the beach till 8 then shower later to go out whilst the English tourists are decked out in their finery at 7.30 ready to eat out in the still broiling heat.

I've heard about siesta - I think it's really cool idea that I get have a time to rest and perhaps take a nap at the most sleepiest time of the day! Reason why restaurants get busy from 7 is simply because we have lunch around 1pm and would not have eaten much after then - we would starve if we waited longer... Some people do have afternoon tea around 3pm, but we usually only eat snacks, just to get ourselves going for rest of the work time.

um..it's been a while since i was in food service, but i'd say around 4 to 5 pm. that's when a lot of people get out of work, and if it's hot nobody wants to cook. there's usually a lunch rush too.

Hi scarlet woman, i always laugh when Gordon Ramsay opens the doors of Hell's Kitchen at something like 6 p.m. and all the people turn up so early all dressed up, it really is such a different way of life. Also they complain about slow service whereas here we just accept it as the Greek way.

Hi Scarlet-woman, gosh that is incredibly early to eat, that's only just past lunch time here. What a complete difference in cultures.

Hi thea09, The time for dinner here usually is between 7-10p.m. But, for singles, they prefer to go out later usually around midnight. There is a lot of stall that open only during night and its open until early morning. Some restaurant (Mamak restaurant) very busy during live telecast match for English Premier League. Most of the youngster prefer to watch it at restaurant with their friends. happy mylotting and have a nice day.

Hi akuler, sounds like leisurely dining hours there. I didn't realise that Malaysian youths followed English football.

English premier league is no 1 choice here compare to other European league. They always show it live especially when 'big' team played. I am supporter of Liverpool since mid 80s.
