This question has been annoying me forever and i thought hey why not ask a forum full of eager minds. In my family i have some obese people who now consider walking an exercise and I try to do my best to encourage them but is walking really going to help them loose weight or provide them with ANY results? Tell me what you think about this..

walking is one of the best forms of exercise that you can do. and yes it will help, but you also have to watch what you eat. If you do not start with a healthy diet, i do not think that any type of exercise is going to help much

Any movement other than sitting on your butt is exercise and will help burn calories. Walking is an easy form of exercise and is especially helpful for over weight persons as it is less demanding on the body and is less likely to cause damage to joints and such. If you can walk an hour a day it is really beneficial. But if you cannot, any walking is good for you. It keeps you and your joints running smoothly!

I think the walking is a kind of exercise. Here we have a saying: If you have a walk after dinner, you will live to 99 years old. That shows how important the walking is. The jogging is an exercise, so is walking. I love China

For sure its a form of exercise and you can definitely lose weight from walking at a moderate stride. I have witnessed at least two people that I know personally lose alot of weight from walking. One person was my co-worker, she would walk the entire premises of the workplace once in the morning before work and then during lunch. Then my own sister walking on her job as a Postal worker she lost alot of weight and still has maintained her weight for over 6 years now. So if they walk each day and watch what they eat they will lose weight. Good luck!

yes walking is also a form of excersie and defnintly improves your health. IF you are a regular morning walker, then defnintly your weight will reduce, but will take some time for that. But instead if you run , weight reduction will occor at much more pace. There is no doubt becoz itz also a form of excercise and all physical excersie relaxes your mind. Time is also a factor. Walking right in the mid noon is relaxation but works in the opposite sense. So go ahead and walk...happy mylotting

All walking is exercise, but brisk walking is much better for losing weight. It's amazing how many calories can be used up by walking everywhere instead of getting in the car or going on the bus!

Oh yes, walking is exercise, and a highly recommended one. The benefits are huge and different, depending on how fast and long you walk. Faster is not always better, just has different results. Try an internet search for "slow walking burns more calories." Interesting, no? And there's a lot more like it. "Exercise" does not mean "cardio" which is probably what you are thinking of. While cardio is helpful, if they are just getting in to walking, help them stick with that, and slowly build up from it. One of the things that's been going around recently is adding short bursts of jogging, so that could be away of breaking in to cardio. Which, btw, cardio only needs to happen about 3 times a week. The most important thing about exercise is that it has to be something they will repeat, and can make a life time commitment to. People who push hour long walks a day or 45 minute jogs on to people who are just getting started are only going to make them feel like failures, and set them back even further. Again, walking is great! And even as little as 15 minutes a day can help, but a half hour a day is usually a good start for most people. The problem with weight loss is that there is so much information out there, and so much of it contradicts. There are a lot of people who, in my opinion, want to push the average person too far.
