I used to be in customer service line for a few years. Maybe because of my occupation, until now, I still got the habit of smiling at stranger who happens to have eye contact with me. As I walk along the street, shop in the supermarket or taking the public transport, sometimes, I will unknowingly smile at a stranger that happens to look at me or have eye contact with you. As I love children very much, without fail, everytime when I see babies or young children, I would just love to smile or wink or make funny faces at them. Just wondering, will you respond back with a smile if a stranger smile at you???

Absolutely. Smiling has been one of my assets because of my dimples. And i feel very pretty when i wear one. Smiling also exercises our muscles in the face and prevents wrinkles. It can also put the tension on other people's mind too.

I will smile or wink at any stranger. I played peek a boo with a little boy today in a restaurant, we had fun and his granma thought it was cute :) No harm done, just a simple little game with a little boy :) I will also wave if driving. never know when your vehicle might be noticed and you need help, they will stop cuz you waved. I noticed some responses were negative. How sad.Maybe they live in a bigger town than I do and are afraid of being molested, et, but I think if you are nice first, at least mostly, people are always nice back. Just a simple smile, a nod, a wave, let's people know you are kind and willing to be a friend. And, isn't that what mylotters do :)

I think you maybe right to say that people living in the bigger city are more reserved and careful cos I guess there are too many creepy person out there. You sound so cheerful and friendly. It would be great to receive a smile from you. Cheers =))

Hey, got your BIG smile. Thanks, dear =)) Can I also ask for a hug from you??? You see I'm also a big fan of hugging. But as I live in Singapore which is still considered a traditional country, we don't greet each other by hugging. Among my close friends however, we do hug each other when we see each other. Have a lovely day ahead o

Well, thanks and YOU have a BIG smile from me:) I live on a mountain top in Montana and was also raised in a small town in Oklahoma and my grandaddy taught me to always smile and wave. that has always stuck with me and found it to be true in life. People respond to kindness in any form, be it a smile, a hug, a wave ! By the way, I am big hugger too :) Thanks for responding so kindly, and we will talk some more, ok? quita88

My wife does this all the time too, no matter where we are! She worked in retail stores for years and always had to greet many customers through the day. I guess that is where she picked that up from! I do not really do it too much while I am going about my business at shops or anything. When I am out walking though, whether it is in the streets surounding our house, along the beach or in the national parks nearby, I always smile and greet the people walking past me. I do not know why it is that I do it when I am out walking leisurely! Maybe because I am more relaxed and not thinking about where I am going and what I have to do?

most of the time i'll smile back if a stranger smiles at me. i must admit that doesn't happen often. most times, it's people who i don't know but see often that smiles at me. they can be people who work in the same building as i do or living in the same apartment block. i rarely get smiles from strangers on the road because i'd be too busy walking to notice. when i do notice strangers smiling at me, i usually smile back. the only times i don't is if i suspect they have an agenda. these are usually people who are holding clipboards or brochures. more often than not, they will try to sell me something if i smile back at them.

Sometimes, I really pity these sales people on the street. They must have a lot of courage to handle many many rejections. Normally, I will still smile back at them. But I will try to keep a distant from them to show that I am actually not interested in what they are selling or promoting. Most of the time, they get the message. Have a lovely day ahead =))

Smiles are free, and they make people feel good. Both the giver and the reciever. It only takes a few seconds to make everyone feel good. It is hard not to smile back at someone smiling at you. Smiling releives tention, and laughter is even better for that. Since it is the only truely free thing left in the world yes I smile back. :)

I always try to give people a smile when we meet eyes. At times, I may say hi or give them a quick nod of my head as well. I think it is important to give some kind of acknowledgement that you are aware of the other person's presence, especially when you work with people. It makes the person know that they are important and that you do care what happens. Thanks for bringing up the subject.

It depends if the stranger is hot..jejej. usually i wont maybe if they smile at me first. But I wont initiate a smile at a stranger. Some people seem to be okay with it. But some take it to another level. Most of all if they are men, that's where it gets weird.

Always. It is like a reflex with me. You can't not smile at someone when they smile at you. It is a form of wordless greeting. It is like saying "Hi" without actually saying it. To not return a smile is rude, IMO. I am the same way about babies. I am always making faces, playing peek-a-boo, and smiling at kids. They're so cute.

I believe smiling is a very contagious effect behind it. I almost believe that smiling is like laugher and it can create and cause better and greater healing. I would say it depends on my mood and time if I would smile back at a stranger. That is because I wouldn't want a person smiling at me while I am sad or tearing because I would feel like they were just mocking me. It is a stranger first off so you truely don't know their intensions when your angered or sad. But I can conclude that I would smile back at an stranger if I was normal or happy because it is only hospitable to do so. I can image someone extending their hand and him or her doesn't shake it. That feeling is probably horrible. So if I'm in the right mood I would smile back just our of politeness. God bless.

Hello doggyhouz, thanks for your great response. Yes yes, smiling is indeed very contagious and it definitely will brighten up the day. Of cos, it would be very difficult to smile back at someone if you are in a lousy mood. So, I hope you will have a lovely day ahead =))

I won't take the initiative to smile at a stranger. If a stranger smiles at me, I will pay a smile back. I think that is natural and it is good to do that. Once I was travelling in an overnight train going home. The women who sat next to me started talking to me and she ended telling her whole life story including her problems with husband. She wanted to get my phone number. I felt very confused and I couldn't say that I won't give the number and I finally gave her a wrong phone number. I feel guilty for doing so, but I don't want to be in troubles.

yah its a friendly gesture, but it depends on who smiles at you. what if they smile at u and u smell something fishy, they might be bad men adn they want to do something bad u. u smile back but dont be so trusty.

If I notice something fishy or strange, then I won't try to smile back or make eye contact with them. So most of the time, I smile mostly to woman, elderly, children, younger guys or gals and exercise great caution when smiling to a man.

I'm agree that it depends on the different scenarios. But in most case, I'v experienced, smile is really useful to gain a good communication with others. As least,it can pass your positive attitude to others.

Firstly what a lovely photo of you and your daughter smiling :-) At first I may be suprised if a stranger smiles but it always manages to make my day and I smile back. Sometimes its nice to make that small effort and connection with strangers. It makes the world seem like a friendly and smaller place. Your right about children. Often young children wave at me, say hello ect.. I think its a shame that when we grow up we become more reserved and aren't as open and friendly as young children are.
@thhoon72 (1009)

29 Jul 09
Thanks, dear. Young children are so innocent and they will not doubt your motive of smiling at them. They will just smile back at you uncondiotnally. But for adults, most of them are weary when someone just smile at them. It is indeed a shame that people are becoming more distant and reserved. Cheers =))
