Why do they do it?

There are some commercials that are really annoying, and I can't figure out their purpose. For example, why are the mechanics and technicians at GE singing love songs while they build jet engines? Why does Boeing advertise when few of us could afford and even fewer would want to have a passenger plane at home? Why do public utilities, such as the electric company or the water company advertise? Do they fear we'll go to a competitor? Lately, the turnpike authority has been telling us how much they want us to use the turnpike. I can understand advertising to the people who buy the airplanes and such from Boeing, but for the rest of us? I'm not aware of choices for most of us when it comes to public utilities. If the turnpike is the best way to get where I'm going, I'll use the turnpike, like just about everyone else. As for the emotional GE workers, I haven't a clue, but I guess I should sing with them the next time I buy a jet engine for personal use. Couldn't prices go down if these people would whittle away their advertising budgets?

Every penny spent by company is for a reason! As the first post clearly highlights, its the advt. which made you post, which would give u and us money by responding to it as well :d... hehehe Doesnt it all make sense??

Sorry! It makes no sense to me at all. Are you planning to buy a jet engine? Will you use your MyLot income to pay for it?

There must be a good psychological reason behind it. These people think a lot about it I guess. Whatever their logic about it is, I don't get it either. lol. I hope some people do to pay off their efforts. Some commercials are really good though, a few are heart warming and some others are really creatively worth remembering. On second thought, I I cannot forget commercials that are annoying, maybe that is one of the reasons why they made it so, for people not to forget about it. Could it be the psychology of being annoyed? :D. It could be....

I ask myself the same question. Someone above stated that in the state of NY they get to vote on whether they get sewer or well water (something to that affect)- and that is probably where those commercials are more understood and make more sense when aired. On the other hand you have many people like me that live in an area where we do not have a choice on these type of things- we are basically forced to comply with what is available in our area. This reminds me of cable in my area- for the longest time now Comcast dominated our area and we had no choice- now I am seeing smaller cable companies coming about....giving us more of a selection.

Of course, since everyone had to get new TVs or buy converters, free TV is no longer one of those choices!

The ones that bother me are the sales persons that yell at you, I hit the mute button and I don't even know what they are selling. Billy May was especially annoying.

I enjoy some commericals myself but to be forced to watch them is another story. I feel what you are saying here but also I view from this view. We need these things and so many people are behind you having that car or food. It takes so many people to make a good thing happen that I feel we all take for granted somethings that seem like they are owed to us. I am not trying to offend in anyway I just want you to see from someone elses view how I see some companies as well as some commericals. Take care and happy mylotting to you as well.

The purpose is exactly what is happening. These companies want people to talk about their adverts and therefore their products. The more annoying they are, the more people tend to remember them and gives them something to moan about to their friends. This could then lead to the friends looking out for the adverts or searching for them on YouTube or similar which gives them further publicity.
