A Listener or a Reader: Who are you?

Suppose, somebody is presenting in front of you on a projector screen. There are points on the topic of presentation written in the presentation slides. Simultaneously, the person is explaining and elaborating his/her presentation with speech. Do you concentrate on what the person is explaining or let your attention divert towards reading what is there on the projector screen?

Slides are attractive to the eyes, speech is to the ear and mind seeks sound and vision to grasp the maximum. I would glance at the slide, listener to the speaker while watch the writing or script too. But of course while viewing the slides the script may escape from my eyes if the speaker proceeds with the rhythm of his speech.

i don't really know, but if it was me,my choice would depend on who the person is, if he is close to me, no matter how the screen is attractive, i only listen to him, that's my answer,so superficial, lol

Yeah, it looks too superficial. Looks like you concentrate on the person, rather than on the topic. Nevertheless, thanks for your response. Happy Mylotting!!

I really have a hard time listening in my class during my school days maybe because i got easily destructed by my noisy classmates ( ha ha )and sometimes i felt bored and sleepy listening to my professor so i guess I'm a reader since i love to read and i can understand well if i read ;)

Yeah, listening is always good to get a better interaction, but no noise is a prerequisite for it. I believe you get good percentage of what is being taught by just reading. Thanks for your response. Happy Mylotting!!

i probably try to do both. i read what pops on the screen, but i try to listen to what the person is saying also. the type on the screen is usually the highlights of the speech. if this presentation is in school or work, the type is what the audience would be writing down as notes for reference, where for studying or work solutions.

Ah, that`s great. Actually, concentrating on what is being said simultaneously noting what is written is what we call visual listening. It is considered as the best way to attend a presentation. I believe you must be good at that. Thanks for your response. Happy Mylotting!!

Hello my friend, now this takes me back to the days when this used to happen. I'd read the whole thing and wonder why on earth they needed all this carry on when they could have just written it down in some blumf for us. In the business world there is no need to present to us like children and we should have the option to have the written version only and leave the people who take longer to absorb the information to enjoy the presentation. I was a clock watcher back then and hated having my time wasted.

In most part, you are right. Actually, this is what is called a poor presentation technique in which a person writes down on the presentation everything he/she has to say and then just reading out what is there on the screen. I such a case, the preferred thing will be to just hand over the written or digital copies of the material. But, in a good presentation, only points and stats are there, and most of the explanation is done by the presenter himself/herself verbally coz verbal communication gives better degree of interaction than just reading. In such a case, just handing over the written/digital copy to all will not suffice. But, one thing is common in both of us. We both are clock watchers and wait for all those boring presentations to end as soon as possible. Thanks for your response. Happy Mylotting!!

Sometimes It depends on the presenter that how interactively he is giving you the extract of the information written on the screen. If he is much interesting there is no need to look at the screen. Now we come to your question that .........ummmmmmm OK I am a good Listener & A very interesting thing is I am the best observer.

Yeah, that`s the same with me. It depends on the interest generated by the presenter. But, i try my best to focus on what the person is saying. Oh, that`s interesting, you say you are the best observer. To claim oneself openly as the best in any field, really requires huge confidence. I am sure you notice every bit of information around you. Thanks for your response. Happy Mylotting!!
