Toby doesn't like the rain.

For my bithday this year my darling husband bought me a springer spaniel pup. The pup is 8 weeks old and so I found out yesterday, he does not like the rain. I am not particularly keen on the stuff either but I would rather be rained upon than have the house stinking of puppy widdle. Apart from that, my carpet is getting a little tired of the scrubbing. Does anybody have any ideas of what to do with a pup, who is quite intelligent, he has been very quick to housetrain apart from the rain. By the way, in Peterborough UK yesterday, the rain was pretty torrential.

I had that issue with Cookie, my rat terrier. I finally carried her outside, put her down and stood there with her while she piddled as fast as she could! We went back inside and I dried her off with a nice soft towel and told her what a good girl she was. After one more time, she would go out by herself but very quickly! I still towel her off and praise her, though. Now she tends to run over to the garage and do her business under the overhang, she's getting smart!

I am so pleased to hear of other people who have to carry their pups outside, as I did not like to drag him by his collar, thought it might be counter productive. Anyway, I was thinking of covering up part of the garden for him, so thankyou for telling me about that bit as well. I have lost two towels to Toby in his first week as after a nice rub down he enjoys nothing more than a quick game of tug of war with me.

I have a poodle dachhound mix who is the same way. He has never liked the rain. But he will go outside long enough to use the bathroom and then run back in. COntinue to put the pup outside even in the rain, you may ahve to go out there as well with an umbrella to reasure the pup it will be ok.

Because I am training Toby to go out in the garden I do go out with him each and every time to give him a treat each time after he does a widdle. It is working amazingly well, he actually asks to go in the garden for a poop now which is good. I now have an umbrella stored with my plant pots just outside the back door. It is good to hear that other people are having the same problem, so thankyou for answering me. I thought I had just gained a slightly deranged puppy.
