Would you rather buy a computer or custom build one yourself from parts?

I would rather build my own computer; this way, I can select higher quality and better performing parts for my computer. I can also control the amount of money spent on building a computer. What about you, fellow myLotters? -virusxtreme24

All the computers that I've had since 1990 were custom-made. Even the one I'm using now is customized to suit my needs. It's actually cheaper that way, and I get what I want rather than excepting what's already on the brochure or flyer with no, or minimal customization.

I agree, buying your own parts and building one by yourself can yield you a better selection of parts then if you were to buy one from a major PC manufacturer.

If I had the knowledge, I would love to build my own computer. My brother in law always does this when someone in his family gets a computer. He is great at it, and has been doing this for years and years, maybe even decades. My nephew, who just got out of the marines is very good at it as well. I think the next time I go to buy a computer, I am definitely going to get tips from them. I may even have them help me build it, that is if I get brave enough to go that route. Interesting discussion. Have a great day here on myLot!

I have never thought about building my own computer, because I don't know enough about computers to do that, and if I tried to build my old, I would probably have to ask for help all the time. I think it could be interesting to build your own computer, but you need to know more about computers than I do. I bought my computer in a shop, and it was really difficult for me to decide which computer to buy, but my husband came with me to the shop, and he helped me find the right computer.

Nowadays, the price difference between a branded pc and an assembled pc is very less. and the benefits of a purchasing a branded pc are configured by experts, company fittings and over warranty assurance and after sales support from the company. but in the case of assembled pc you will have first assemble all the parts, configure them, individual warranty, no after sales service or private service. so why not a branded pc.

I always buy the market/family computer and then gradually build it up from there. I know a person who has made custom built computers as his profession replacing bits and pieces for people and upgrading machines for a slightly lower price then most stores.

Well I would go for custom build, infact my desktop is having custom configuration only.. because in custom configuration.. I can use hardwares as per my cost and requirements. and also easy to upgrade your system..

I would rather have the custom built computer for me than I have to pay for a computer set. Not only that the custom built would be cheaper, but I can also set the specification of the computer based on what I need not what is given in a package. Though I am not that good in computer building and I don;t know much about how to build a computer, but I do really think that a custom built computer would perform better because it is set on what we need and what our activity with the computer. So no specification would be wasted and we would be able to get what we need.

I agree with you, I prefer to choose the custom CPU than the built in one. We can choose the specific parts of the computer and can control the money. Because we can guess how much will we spend on it.

I'd rather build my own's computer. But not all brands have this service, I suppose. When I bought my first PC, I built it by myself. But when I bought my laptop,as there were no such special service, I didn't build it by myself.
