People in olden days avoid traveling for fear of being attacked by wild animals or bandits / pirates. Now in this modern age, what dangers have you encountered and what precaution would you advise?

Although I do travel, I don't travel a lot. Maybe one of the reason is because I don't like traveling alone but in groups! In twos is fine given that I've been to those places or had been to that place before, otherwise big groups! 10~20 would be the most ideal! And so far during my travel experience I am only cautious of theft. Traveling to any place would easily make you a distinguised tourist, and therefore an easy target!

I agree, a tourist usually carries a camera. Even the way they dress clearly distinguishes them from the local people. It's as easy as identifying a freshmen during the first day of school.

I got very sick on the way from Sumatra to Malaysia. I was ill for one week. A few weeks later I fell down a drain and that also happened in Malaysia. In the Maldives when I was walking along a lonely beach I got attacked. I would advise care when eating or drinking in a developing country where the tap water is not safe for drinking. I ate a salad and I wish that I hadn't. I got a high fever and terrible sickness all from eating a salad. I would suggest a lady that is alone doesn't walk along a deserted beach. I have been to 52 different countries and most of time I have been safe from danger. I always get travel insurance for a trip that would cover me in case anything bad happened to me.

I agree with you, its not fun at all to travel with a bad stomach. You worry about getting to the nearest restroom, vomitting, dizzy, with no appetite to taste the exotic food all around you. When we get sick, the best hotel accommodation would just like being on a hospital bed.

True, most accidents occur due directly or indirectly to bad weather. But sometimes its unavoidable, especially when you have a train or plane to catch.

Dangers of travelling depends on the mode of travel also. Like if you are travelling by flight then there can be very less precautions you can take. Like in past 2-3 months we have seen 2 plane crashes. In such cases I think it is advisable if the aircraft company takes some precautions. Like the planes should be checked regularly according to the safety standards. The safety standards should be stringent as it concerns the lives of the people. When you travel by train I think the bigger danger is being looted. I am telling this from my personal experience. I was travelling in India to some remote part. In between the train was stopped and the train was looted. While travelling by car or something I guess we have to take care while driving as the road accidents are the biggest danger. And also when going to strange places it is better to take with you some kind of weapon, like a knife or something. You never know when you are going to need it.

Vigilance is key to safety especially in uncharted territories but carrying a weapon may also be a cause of inconvenience when going through security inspections. Even with a weapon, it is dangerous if you are outnumbered.

yes carrying a weapon can be cause of inconvenience but I think we can keep a knife or something in our cars. It is for our safety, not to attack anybody. Again if you are outnumbered you can not do anything but if you are attacked by say 1 or 2 you can always save yourselves with a small weapon. This is what I feel.

You must have learn some self-defense skills and brave enough to do so. I usually just give them the money, as I don't carry much anyway rather than risk being hurt or killed. Robbers don't want your life, they just want your money.
