Brand New or Second Hand Phones?

Well, if it were my choice, of course I'd choose a brand new phone than a second hand phone but, with times getting challenging yet our interest with having new things, some of use would decide to consider second hand items. I have a colleague who has switched from phone to phone over the past few months and it was from trading in his mobile phone with those that have been sold to stores that he often goes to. They still work and look good but, some people would prefer band new items so as they are the 'first' ones to own it. I have considered purchasing second hand items but, not yet on mobile phones. How about you guys? Would you like to satisfy yourselves by having different phones through second hand purchases or simply keep a mind set that a brand new phone of your own is far better? Any advantages and disadvantages that you want to share? Elaborative opinions are most welcome (^_^ )

I do not consider anything wrong in buying a second hand mobile. Each and every day new mobile models with some extra new features are coming up in market and its not always possible for all to buy a new one everytime. As far as the condition of mobile handset is ok, there is no problem in buying a second hand set. Every one has his / her own opinion on this.

I have to agree that as long as the second hand item is still functioning properly, there is nothing wrong in purchasing a second hand unit. I have not purchased any second hand phone but, I have already purchased other items that are second hand and I am still using up to now like my PSP and my Wacom tablet that I got to purchase online. (^_^ ) Of course, if we want to purchase second hand items, we too would try our best to purchase the best that we could get and not simply purchase them so that we would have something new (-_- )

i think in todays world people thinking and ideology changes so quickly that they r growing more tecno day by day. nokia launces a new set every month with new add on features . so buying an old phone on cheap rates widens our chioce of changing phone at cheap rates.and we can switch to new technology easily when we want and at less rates.

Yes, with the constant updates of mobile phones, prices are getting lower and lower when it comes to models that have been set aside but still provide good use for mobile phone users. Thanks for posting, mohitseth

If you ask me, If its colleague's phone and if you know that the phone has no reals problems then I will definitely go for second hand, As you know there is a new phone everyday. And even if you like a phone I am sure you don't want to keep it forever..so buy a second hand save money and exchange same for a new one or another cool second hand handset....

Indeed, these things are all luxuries that we can either have or not. We can settle with a modest model or get those that would also be considered by others as a fashion statement. My currect phone is already obsolete but, I still use it up to now because I can still use it. Aside from that, it was given by my brother who still works over seas. Its not that I don't want to have a new phone. I just value what my brother worked for. Of course, that's different with those other phones that we could purchase from those stores that would sell second hand units. Good point there, vj0007. Perhaps my colleague also has the same perspective with the different mobile phones that he has used.

I have never bought a second hand phone eversince i started using a cell phone... although i did have my share of selling my old cell phone to buy a new one... but right now... i tend to just give my old one to relatives who need them the most... i don't buy cell phones anymore because i usually get the free one offered by my line provider... so that saves me from choosing and budgeting my money...

I don't usually trade in my old cell phone... i just wait for two years because that way i don't have to give any additional payment... i don't really go for those new style cell phones... much too fancy for me...

Oh yes, aseretdd. Do you call those 'plans' from your line provider? I mean, when a new phone comes around and becomes available from your line provider, you can trade-in your current phone, add additional cash and get the new model with ease? If that's the case, how many mobile phones would you own then? I mean, if you give your relatives those old phones, what would you trade-in with your line provider. Having something like that is indeed, very convenient and certainty is also assured to subscribers.

If money is no object, Id definitely choose to get a brand new one. That would make it my own and I usually dont switch phones unless its really unusable, or would require a lot of cash to be repaired or something like that. Since money is an object in reality, I would consider getting a second hand phone but I am picky with its source. Id have to get it from someone I trust, who I know personally. That way, if ever some kind of a problem pops up in the phone with only a few days of use, I can contact him/her and report the problem. He/she would have to get it repaired for me, or would guide me to someone who can. I didnt use to require a phone to have a specific feature for me to consider it, but I did have a "dream" phone that is toned down a bit to match a few existing models. Well, of course I didnt get that but I did pick the very closest to it that is on display. That's the only time I bought a brand new phone. The other phones that I have used were just hand-me-downs from my Mom. She has a lot of cellphone units that she uses for her electronic load business. That is aside from the personal one that she uses. Most of my phones would just come from her "reserve". The process of hand-me-down's would probably be the cheapest way to acquire a mobile phone.LOL

I couldn't agree with you more. If we were only rich or well off with the money we have, I guess everyone would opt for a brand new phone or better yet, the latest model. For hand-me-downs, I have been use to that for as long as I could remember, from clothes that my older brothers use to wear, the books that I got to use at school and the last one would be the cellphone that I am using up to now. If ever I'd buy a new model, I guess I'd take one of those models from another brand, just to see the difference but, I'm really at ease with the one I have right now. I even have another unit of the same kind. Count to think of it, I wish I could find a similar design but, higher specs.. I really fancy phones now-a-days from Nokia that can auto-spell filipino words

Oh, I think I have seen some of those phones before, the make though is rather unknown to me but, if it serves the purpose that you want it to provide, I think there is nothing wrong with getting it. Yeah, more and more phones, well I only know Nokia so far, have that feature which accommodates languages of its user. That should be the case right? Pounding and pounding on the the keypad, I use to do that too, good thing that my phone would ask how certain word should be spelled in case that the autospell feature couldn't give the word that you are looking for and it would store it in its memory, it would be convenient next time you try to type the combination again.

I do have my eye on those phones that have tv. Only has 3 channels but that would be the ultimate phone for me. Oh, there is a feature like that huh? Not that surprised but still slightly surprised. Guess Im also out of date with the cellphone models these days. I might opt to use that automatic feature but I do text using our local dialect, so I do have to pound on the keys. Well, whatever works, right?

I don't really care if it's 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th hand phone. As long as it does what it supposed to do, I'm fine with it.

I prefer brand new if I can afford, but I don't mind buying second hand phone as well. I bought a second hand mobile phone before, it was Nokia 8210 and I never had an issue with it at least for a year or maybe longer (sorry can't really remember) and then I give it to my niece when I bought a new one. I think my niece got to used the mobile phone for a long time as well, before the phone gives up, lol. Actually I couldn't remember if the phone got broken or she lost it! I think the problem of buying second hand phone is warranty because some of them wont give you one and if you accidentally drop it or whatever happen in short period of time that was it, unlike new ones you get to bring it back and have it fix without worrying how much will it cost you.

Thanks for posting, CJay77. Some people would sell their units because they already have a new one or perhaps they have no one to pass it on. Might as well earn money while getting rid of something that you don't longer need or use anymore, right? Good point on mentioning warranty. That is indeed among the advantages of getting a brand new item. You are privileged to be secured that the newly bought item would still have services available even after sale. However, there are those warranties that seems unclear sometimes. For that, I mean that some warranties are indeed available but, when you per chance had to avail for them, it must be within a specific time to be availed as well as services aren't as speedy as it should.

I couldn't bring myself to but a second hand mobile. I use my mobile all the time and become attached to it. There is nothing wrong with buying second hand stuff and, as times get harder, I have bought more and more second hand things. I would rather keep my old mobile for longer than but a second hand one.

Thanks for posting, Craig747 I also share the same views when it comes to being attached to items that we have become accustomed to using for a long time. I actually have a good phone right now. Its a Nokia N-Gage. The alphanumeric keypad is all at the right so most of the typing is done with my right thumb. I have gotten used to this set up and find it a bit challenging when I get to use other phones from my friends and family with the usual keypad layout. I use both hands when I use my phone while the usual ones can be easily manipulated with one hand. I guess I will still continue to use this mobile phone of mine for as long as it can still function. I have gotten it repaired a few times too, with regards to software. I think you don't have to be worried about referring your cellphone as just 'mobile' since this discussion is indeed under the interest.

i would definitely buy a new one. with a new one, we can always be sure that there's nothing wrong with it. no virus, no malfunctions, no etc. and there's warranty which we can use within a period of time when our cellphone encounters a problem. with a secondhand, we couldn't really know if there's something wrong with it. the store would probably not say if there's something wrong with it. and there's no warranty that comes with it. if we encounter a problem we cannot take it back to the store and have it fixed for free. nor we cannot take it back there for replacement. there's too much risks when buying a second hand.

Hello, I actually prefer to have a brand new phone over a second hand mobile, mainly because firstly the battery is new, and not used and secondly it would be in better condition. Unless the phone is in 'as new' condition, that is an exception. Make sure you have a good day, Happy Lotting!!

EliteUser Most of us would indeed prefer to have a brand new unit than a second hand unit with the reasons that you have already mentioned, no doubt about that. This also makes me hesitate on buying from kiosks at malls at our place and prefer second hand units from real owners who would sell them online. Thanks for sharing~!

I personally don't like second hand purchases when it comes to gadgets because I'm pretty much scrutinize every feature of each gadget that I buy. However, If I can't afford that gadget, I'm going to save for it just to get a brand new. It's always satisfying to buy a brand new gadget because you'll get the excitement of un-boxing the gadget, you'll get the thrill of removing the lcd plastic cover from the screen, and many other stuffs that you'd enjoy when you buy a new one.

incredibleDNA, that's also one of the things I look forward to when I purchase brand new items. The excitement that we get when we are about to take it from its packaging and how everything looks and even smell brand new. We would even go over the manual, read it even if we already somehow know what the features would be due to our interest on buying that model early on. Checking pamphlets or online information with regards to that model. And we also christen it by personalizing our brand new item. Be it on themes, ring tones, images and so on.. Something that we don't get to appreciate when we purchase second hand units (-_- )

techsaqib, thanks for your input. Yeah, I have seen china-phones being available and they do have a lot of features that you'd expect from other models of other brands that would come at a high price. I guess the popularity of it being affordable is getting higher but, some would still have hesitation due to warranty issues that the distributor would offer. Known brands grant certainty while those that aren't as popular don't.. Durability aside, some phones do step up to the challenge and the features that you could avail are just impressive. The last one I saw, you can actually watch television. If china-phones would offer Wi-Fi capability, I guess I'd be buying one with a qwerty keypad. (^_^ )

If I had money to spare, then I would most definitely prefer buying new phones. But since I dont, I would just stick with the second hand ones. There's nothing wrong with second hand phones anyway. I am also a fun of them since you can have them in a much cheaper price than when they were initially introduced in the market. Another advantage of not buying a brand new phone is that the manufacturers would eventually release newer versions and you'll end up regretting buying too soon. Buying second hand phones actually makes me feel as if I am the winner of all since I didnt get to spend much money from buying it and I can choose from a huge variety.

calai618 That is indeed a good point to consider, especially that we aren't as lucky as other people when it comes to money. Second hand units are indeed cheaper, it just depends on our keen observation on which second hand item we would opt to purchase since they are already cheaper than new ones, we just have to be careful on certain defects that it may come along. Also, a huge number of models to choose from, even though there are new models being released every now and then, recently released models are still good to come-by Thanks for sharing~!

Yeah, when it comes to brand new items, warranty really makes a difference compared to second hand items that one can be wary with. Then again, those who sold you the second hand item can also give you th receipt so that you can still avail for the warranty, in case that it is still covered. None the less, it is still satisfying to purchase something for yourself which is brand new

When I was younger I used to buy only second hand phones and I was glad with them as they are really cheap and most of the older models are much better than the new ones.I bought my last phone from the shop as I said I finally need something new and I am really disappointed. It is broken now just as its guarantee ended.I took it to the service and the man said the repair would cost almost the same money as a new one.

So do you still buy second hand phones are you have now considered purchasing brand new models when you need another phone? Seems strange that some gadgets that we buy would really not function after the warranty span has ended. That's why its rather questionable if the warranty does really get used when you buy something new.. Thanks for posting your share, mokka

Of course, it should be working. Who would buy a phone, brand new or second hand, if it wasn't working? Of course, there are really those who do buy them. They buy them for extra parts that they can use in repairing other phones. Yeah, that's why a manual is very nice to read when you don't know much about the phone or any gadget that you might have and plan no using

Thanks stephcjh Yes, new items would always come complete, with a service warranty and would last far longer than second hand items. Certainty is what we get with brand new items and we just end up taking chances with second hand items (-_-") Of course, with skilled observation, one could still get a good item from browsing all merchendise from shops who sells second hand items. Then again, it is indeed better to purchase something new. Perhaps one should just save enough money to be able to purchase the item that they want. Who knows, by the time that they do get to save enough money, a newer item becomes available and far better than the item that they intended on purchasing in the first place? I always try to practice my patience with such circumstances actually (^_^")

I prefer to buy a new phone rather than a second hand phone or other gadgets but it a known friend or family member owns that phone and I know how he/she take cares of his/her things, I might buy it if I really need a phone. But buying second hand phone to stores, I prefer brand new and to the store that brand of phone is selling like NOKIA, SONY ERICSON, etc. not to ordinary stores where lots of brands are being sell. I haven't bought a second hand phone, always brand new so that I will be the one to manipulate, install and discover what that phone can have and has.

Thanks for posting, anne12d Yes, if we know the background of the second hand item that we are going to consider on buying I guess we won't have any doubts to how the item would serve us later on. We all know well of the disadvantages of that we could experience if we purchase second hand units that we don't really try to scrutinize. We might end up disappointed if we don't really take care on trying to purchase something less, we might also get something less as well.

Hi,it is such an interesting topic, thank you for sharing. You know,Mobile phone technology keeps changing and improving everyday, you can find in anywhere with mobile phones updating and eliminated even in every single minutes,so you can never catch the pace of the IT.Then to me,I think it is no need to have second hand while have to sell and buy from time to time,it is such a waste of money and I will get mad with it.So far,so goos,i am using Black Berry 8100,and I feel it is good, sliding mouse ball, easy phone email,MSN messenger and fast typing SMS,I love it.And to be kidding,I was heard that Obama is also using Black Berry,is that got to be true???

You have a good point here, jackie_chen. With the technology constantly progressing, keeping up with what is new seems to be only possible if you have a lot of money or your work would be to test every new model that becomes available. (^_^") Then again, we just can't help it sometimes but to try to keep up or our preferences just wavers from time to time and we end up purchasing things again and again every time we lose interest. Black Berry? I believe that its one of the expensive brands that you could purchase. Features are also impressive, not to mention the services that you would get from your providers. That brand is not common for the majority so it seems, you must be very well endowed. The current president of the United States has one indeed.

well, for me i would choose brand new instead of second hand phones why ? i seen before many times, people sell their phones because 1) they want to change a newer and better phone...2) their phone has malfunctioned but still in good shape or 3) the phone is a stolen one if i am so unlucky to buy a stolen phone, there will be too many hassles for me or if i buy a malfunctioned one, it would be a waste of money so therefore, i feel more safe and secure buying a brand new phone

christmas_, thanks for sharing your insight. Indeed, those reasons are not distant from reality. The initial reason would seem reasonable for starters. If I have an old phone that I would like to dispose of, I guess I would try to sell it so that I would earn something along the process. I would have it reformatted or flashed as they would refer with mobile phones and add items like charger, manual, and so on to increase its value. The next reason, I would consider tolerable. Most of the time, technicians would be the one considering on purchasing malfuntioning phones as they would try to repair the irregularities of the phone and then perhaps sell those phones that they have repaired in their stores as well. Some parts are of course replaced and they would call them 'recons' or reconstructed units. The last reason, which most of my colleagues would speculate on would be heightened with examples like, units unable to function due to security codes prohibiting others from using the phone. A complete software takeover would be applied to such circumstances. That would indeed cost more. These reasons should be enough to consider purchasing brand new items but, its still their choice if they would or would not take heed.

Most definitely anybody would want to have a brand new phone. My boyfriend just recently brought me a used phone on craigslist, and the phone works great. Of coarse most used phones have scratches and minor damage, but hey it is alot better than paying for a brand new $600 phone.

Yeah, you are right. Given the choice, why would they prefer a second hand unit if they could really get a brand new one? If we really are lucky, we could get to purchase a second hand unit that only had minor damages and would still provide the same satisfaction that we would get from brand new units. A matter of choice and contentment. Thanks, Duvalgirlmagic

Thanks for posting, youngjaebo (^_^ ) Your post just proves that its a matter of preference if one would consider brand new items or those items that were previously owned. You have purchased other items that have been used before. It seems that you have gathered a good amount of experience on looking at items that you would deem as good even though that they have been previously owned or not worthy to be recognized as an item that one would tolerate. The advantage of being affordable shouldn't be the only reason for buying second hand items but, one should still be responsible to check the items first before making a final deal. (^_^ )
