Canada Slaps Facebook Upside The Head and WINS!

Regina, Saskatchewan
August 27, 2009 10:37pm CST
Stand up and cheer all you social site users. Canada, that quiet, polite, and these days, HOT country north of the border of the most powerful country in the world has come into it's own power. Today it was announced that Canada's Privacy Commissioner has succeeded in slapping Facebook upside the head and forced it to change it's privacy policies with such affect that other major social networks on the world wide web will soon be following suit if they don't want to lose over 12 million Canadian users. The full story can be found here: http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20090827/facebook_fix_090827/20090827/?hub=TorontoNewHome (You may have to copy and paste this into your browser). So stand up and cheer all you Canadian women. Because it was a woman who spearheaded these changes to protect the personal privacy and information of it's citizens and in so doing, EVERYONE on the world wide net who uses this site and many others. Thanks to Jennifer Stoddart, no longer will personal profile information automatically be shared with third parties when users activate applications on FB for games, quizzes, etc. Information that is now used by these third parties without users knowledge or consent. From now on, if a user delete's their account, ALL information will be gone from the algorithms and not accessible anymore by the spyware of hackers, or third party sites. It will be as if you were never there. These are important changes and will have a huge impact on not only Facebook, but MySpace, and other globally popular 'social' sites on the web. Even Mylot will have to make these changes if they want to stay active globally. And Canada is not stopping there. Jennifer Stoddart has made it clear that the security of the net in terms of the protection of users personal information and privacy needs to be legislated and policed. If she can slap FaceBook upside the head and win................then look out world wide web, your days of playing havoc with my name, my address, my phone number, my IP address, my credit card, or whatever else I must needs put out there, are going to be over before you know it. NEVER underestimate the power of a woman..........especially a Canadian woman! LOL So what do you think of Canada now eh? ROFL

This is great news indeed for every one every where that uses the net, not just FaceBook as this will have a ripple affect right through cyberspace. I'm so proud it was a Canadian woman that made it happen!

Well, let's hope the United States government follows suit. Uh - if things are the way I think it is, I wonder who would win if there was a snowball war between the United States & Canada ...

Hi sparkofinsanity long time no see. hatley here. hurrah for'Canada always thought you were okay folks.this sounds really good and''has been needed for some time. mylot will probably have to follow'suit too.this reminds me of some social site i almost joined last summer that had asked a lot of personal information from me.well it seems without my knowing it I had signed permission to join some phone outfit called vanguard and my son found these odd charges on his'p;hone bill.well it seems that I signed up for a sweepstakes but in the garbled questions I had actually also signedup for this'odd ball service as a prelude to be in the sweepstakes drawing.I was in other words suckered in.so he called the phone co and demanded the charges be dropped as he had not authorized them.

Hi Hatley and it's so good to see you. We were all so worried when you disappeared so suddenly for so long. What Canada has done, will ensure in the future that the kind of situation you just described will become an anomoly rather than a given in the future. There will always be hackers that will find ways to get around whatever safety protocols are put in place, but at least, in the future, it will no longer be a major concern and net users will be safer. How cool is tht huh? lol

I think that is great news. I don't feel we should have to put such personal information on the web if we don't want to..Why does some sites require a cell phone to even join? Crazy..I am not from Canada but it can only mean good things for us all..

That is true it is hard to figure out which are which until it is to late. That is why it is always good to be able to ask others about sites and stuff before we join. I tried to join a Data site but it wouldn't let me since I didn't have a cell phone. I have a Landline but strange it didn't ask for that but only wanted a cell phone.

Yes it does mean good things for everyone everywhere. And in Western society especially more people now have cell phones than land lines, which is why they ask for your cell number. In case of problems, sites like to have your number so they can get in touch with you off the net.

Depends on the site Alice. The sites with less than honest intentions supplement their 'income'(through kickbacks) by allowing third party sites to access phone numbers of members for sales pitches, but good sites only want it for identification and emergencies. The problem is, you can never tell in the beginning which site is honest and which isn't................

Hey Cher......it also means that current personal info on FB will be protected too, not just new stuff. What you post yourself will not be censored, but what is on your private account page will be. And the websites that got that info previously from apps etc., you downloaded, will no longer be able to use it........they will have to wipe it from their own systems. Like a 'trickle down' affect.......

Not bad... not bad at all. This may in fact earn a "Finally some good news". ... ... ... Okay, it's earned it. Finally some good news I mean lets contrast what happened there recently with what's happened stateside. Anonymity, "what that?". Free Speech, RIP. Someone says you slandered them, guess what happens to you. "All your identity are belong to U.S." Never thought I'd live to see that, oh wait, yea I did. At least Canada has a glimmer of hope in there. Still plenty of improvement left, but hey, its the weekend Spark and I'm willing to accept the news as a win.

Oh it's a win gamer. And will continue to be. Ms. Stoddart isn't done with the net yet, and so many sites of all kinds are going to find that they will have to change the privacy protocols in the future and that's REAL good news. If you think about it, it will cut down on spam too! ROFL

Great that your country is taking the first step in protecting it's citizens, and for recognizing that these types of cyber threats are real! South of the border (take hint, USA!), this is a growing problem and if we're going to be so intent about creating a global world through monetary and electronic means (internet), we also need to look within and determine ways to protect ourselves better. Take a lesson from Canadians and PROTECT YOUR CITIZENS! PS-Sparks, I was really missing you last night and was going to start a discussion, but here you are! :)

As a fellow Canadian molly, I'm a bit put off by your tone, but after visiting your profile and reading some of your posts, I feel that you are not best pleased with our Country. That is your right. However, I believe you are missing the point here of this post. First of all our Canadian tax dollars were not specifically 'dipped into' to pay for this. This was work as usual by lady in charge of this kind of thing. So please do not confuse issues. Secondly, this is a tremendous accomplishment for Canada, for Canadian women, but more importantly for EVERYONE that uses the internet and has their privacy invaded with every stroke on the keyboard. The trickle down affect of this is going to be enormous and it will change the way third party websites access our personal information as well as change the way other countries write their own privacy laws. It is one thing to be disillusioned with your government, but it is another to deny credit where credit is due.
