What do you do if you cannot fall asleep at night?

I do not have trouble sleeping until I am married. I am a very light sleeper and I can easily distracted by sound. Therefore my husband snores will definitely be one of the reasons. Besides, my daughter will go to bed about 10pm to 11pm, and from there on I will need to rush for my personal work like surfing the net and also my house chores. By the time I finished the job, it is almost 1am. And when I want to sleep, I am wide awake. My body and mind are not cooperating. When the situation happened, I will try to close my eyes and force myself not to open it again and it worked all the time. How about you? Do you face the same problem and what you do to entertain yourself when you can't fall asleep?

Hello Shuetyeng, I face the same problems too. But this was happen since long time ago. It was when I pregnant with my baby. When I was preggie, I love to take nap in the afternoon. It could be few hours nap. When come to the night time, I can not fall asleep. There was the time I have no internet access at home. My only entertaiment is watching drama. Sometimes I was too tired but still could not fall asleep. I would read some parenting magazines. Hence I am getting late to bed. But now I have my new found hobbies. I get to surf net when I can not fall asleep at night. I spend my time blogging, doing Mylot and check my emails. Some times I chat with my friends at MSN. I find some of them are night owls too. Until 2am, it is the best time I sleep. I can easily sleep in few minutes anytime after 2am. If I go to bed at 12am, it will just waste my time on the bed. I could not sleep easily at 12am or earlier.

Hello my dear friend, thanks for your comment. I was totally opposite with you. When I was pregnant, although I have few hours nap at noon, I can still easily dozed off at night (with the loud snoring from my husband). Maybe that time, I do not have my OWN laptop and I do not do net surfing that frequent, therefore my bed time is kinda of fix (about 11pm). Now I am really addicted to internet, it is like a "main task" for me. As I mentioned, once my daughter went to bed, my me-time will begin by login to my blog, emails and also Mylot. You and I are the night owls, our bed time is about 2am. I think I will toss and turn on my bed until 2am if I sleeps earlier..LOL Anyway, we do need to listen to our body. We must find the time to take a rest besides our hectic or busy schedule.

Hello my friend, thanks for your comment once more. It is bad feeling right when you could not fall asleep at night especially during pregnancy. I am sure you know pregnant makes us feeling tired more easily and adequate sleep is vital. I am weird too that I could sleep so good last time with the loud snoring from my husband but now I could not do so. Sometimes it is a pity scene too to see my husband tired from his office work but can't have a good night sleep because I will always pull his blanket to wake him from the snore but what else can I do.... Anyway, it is great that at least now you do have a quality sleep time.

I think the reason that you are having difficulty going to sleep during that time, is because your body is active, due to the cleaning and everything . Research shows that active bodies at night due to cleaning and exercise will send message to the brain, hence the brain will be active as well, making it hard to sleep. But it is still mind over body that is why you are able to go sleep sometimes, right? If i have done everything to be able to sleep but to no avail, and is still twisting and turning, I usually get a bit of fresh air outside. Making my mind and body relax. It works fine with me.

Thanks for complimenting. Well, sometimes I am having a hard time going to bed because of too much exposure on the computer than having an active body because of exercise. I guess too much computer exposure makes my mind more active so going to sleep is nightmare hehe. Have a wonderful Week..

Hi, nice to see your comment again Underdogy, It is so happy to know that you do exercise on a regular basis. I do not like exercise but I know that is the only way to burn my fat. I seldom exercise before bed time, if yes, I think I will sleep better. By the way, I thought exercise helps us have a quality sleep? What type of exercise that you like? The light emitted from computer screen is intense and it likely to stimulate and wake our nervous system. Therefore, it is better for me and you to cut down the frequency of using internet so that we could have a better sleep. Anyway, thanks for your comment once again.

Thanks for your comment Underdogy, You have gave a very good point here...My body and mind totally active the moment my girl went to bed, because that's the only moment I could have my "me-time". When come to think about the problem, I guess my mind is too active in net surfing. The hours that I spent doing it also makes me have sleepless mind. For me, I will force myself not to wake up from bed although I can't fall asleep. The moment I get up from bed, I would definitely feel more fresher and unable to get back to sleep.

Hello Iriene, Thank you so much for leaving your comment at my topic. I am so appreciated for your support and encouragement. I will surely keep up my work with MyLot. Is it you have fixed a specific time for you to go to bed? For example sleeping at 2am. For me, I am like you too. I will blog and mylotting until 2am almost everyday, and if happened to sleep earlier than this time, I will be toss and turn on the bed. Sometimes when I can't fall asleep, I always think to MyLotting, but I know I will surely can't sleep after I get up from my bed. So it is better for me to stay there and close my eyes without thinking of anything.

Hi Shuetyeng, I haven't had this problem in a while. Thinking about life and problems kept me up. I learned to let it go since I can't change things. If and when I can't sleep I usually get on my laptop and play on MyLot or other sites or watch TV. I usually like to watch "The Golden Girls"...lol...I find them really funny. Anyway, by watching TV my eyes get tired and I am able to fall asleep faster. :) Olivia~

Hello SurveyPrincess. I totally agreed with you that we must have free mind in order to sleep well. The more we think, the more you have sleepless mind. I enjoy net surfing and I could spent many hours with it. My husband always said that if I am 'screen free", I will definitely sleep better. I am very much appreciated your comment and have a nice day to you.

I have several good mysteries by my bed. If that doesn't work I get on the internet and, I surf until my eyes just won't cooperate with me anymore. Another thing that I do is play computer games.Mysteries games are my favorite.I've also tried meditational tapes. That worked real good for me.

Hello Pstclaire, good day to you. Surfing net will not be ideal for me because I will be more awake if I do so. I think if I am "screen-free", I would fall asleep so much easier. Mysteries games? I love playing computer games too. I can be very addicted to it. You are the first person who provided me the method of using meditation in order to sleeps better. It is a very good advice from you. Hope you could share about it here. Thanks!

Good day to you Coolpk87, I guess the sleeping disorder among students are more higher because some of you may need to revise till late at night and the worst is, to wake up early the morning for classes. Watching boring movie is another fun idea from you, but I think it is workable. Last time when I was studying, I fall asleep easily when I read the most boring subject (for me) HISTORY! LOL! Anyway, thanks for your comment and hope you have a great night sleep.

Let me tell a story of my wife, because I can sleep well whenever I wish to. She usually have to sleep at least two hours at daytime, in the afternoon, because she has to constantly monitor our 2 year old baby who has sleeping disorder. At night time, when the kid sleeps better and she wants to go to sleep, she will then have hard time to sleep. What she will do is to pray. Funny about this, is when she starts her prayer, just from the start of "Our Father..." she will close her eyes and stops praying. So she falls asleep. Later on, she will get awake and continue praying with "Hail Mary..." and she falls asleep again. And so on, and so forth. That happened not only once, but many times already.

Hello Neidc. I like your profile picture very much. I need nap too during day time, or else I will be walking like a zombie! LOL I totally understood about the commitment and responsibility being a mom. Further more if the baby has sleeping disorder. Don't worry, I think your baby's problem will be solved he/she grows up. I enjoyed the story very much. It is indeed a very good method and the most important thing is, it worked! I am so happy that your wife has found a right way for her to fall asleep easily.

I thought tea will make us feel more fresh? I will definitely feel more energetic if I drink a cup of tea. Listening to music is another good tip from you. Thanks again.

Hello Good Day to you BingChen, You have provide a lot of good tips there in order to fall asleep better. Really appreciated it. I remembered during school time, I could easily dozed off when I read history book. For me, it is a very boring subject but I have to force myself into it, and at the end I fell into my dreamland...LOL. Better dig out the book from my store room and start reading! Too bad, I hate almost all types of dairy product, so drinking milk before going to bed is a "no no" for me.

I usually have a disturbed sleep. I can wake up from deep sleep at the slightest sound in the pitch of night. Most of the times, I wake up in the middle of the night and if I start worrying or thinking too much about anything, I fail to fall asleep again. It may take hours to get into sleep again. I may be left lying on the bed with my eyes wide open. Then I take a small stroll out of my bed for 5 mins and try to get rid of the thought and fall back to sleep. As somebody rightly said, we need to keep all thoughts and excitations at bay and concentrate on a dark black patch in our minds to fall back to sleep. Surprising ! scratch you soles with a blunt object (a key for example) before you sleep which can induce sound sleep.

Good day to you Suprad1, From your comment, I think you have more a disturbed sleep in the middle of the night than before going to bed. Sometimes I will wake up in the midnight for no reason, but I managed to sleep again after 15 minutes. For my opinion, you have to really free your mind when you are on your bed, or else I am afraid your sleeping style will affect your lifestyle in long term. But I am really glad that you have found the right method for yourself. I am trying to maintain a calm mind so that I will dozed off more faster. Happy MyLotting!

I usually take quite a while to get to sleep anway but if i really cannot sleep i will not get out of bed and do something as that will just wake me up even more and i wont be in the same relaxed state that i am in bed so in the end it will jsut make it worse for me to try and get to sleep. I usually just lie in bed and persist, if that really doesnt work then i will put the television on, and keep th evolume really low and i usually drop off to sleep then.

It is good that you have found the right method for you to fall asleep better. Happy MyLotting!

I am a worry queen so there are many nights when I cannot sleep early. I would end up hitting the sack at 3am or even 4am. If I can't sleep, I would just watch TV shows, play scrabble or surf the Internet until I get drowsy. I'm getting better lately. I don't stay up so late like I used to.

Same goes to me, Rudynahcapone. I am a worry queen too. My personality will be more obvious when there is an outing tomorrow, then I will normally can't fall asleep on the previous night. I will started to worry about a lot of unnecessary things. As the age is catching up, I am more open mined in terms of those unforeseen situation, therefore I will try to relax before when I am going to bed. Anyway, it is good to know that you have a better sleep now.

When I was in college every time I got a new roommate I could never fall asleep the first couple of day. So I woul either listen to music until I fell asleep or force myself to lay there until I fall asleep. The music seemed to work better than just laying there

Good day to you Gelibean, Its really need time, patience and kindness when adjusting to a new room mate. I think it is not an easy thing by forcing yourself to lay on the bed and try to sleep. I am doing that now and sometimes really wish to get up and walk out from the room. I am trying to use the method of listening music before going to bed. Now I am switching on my YouTube music..Hope I will have a better sleep later.

Whenever I can't fall asleep, I will just turn on the TV. Sometimes I will rent a movie off my TV. TV helps me and most people I speak to fall asleep, so I recommend just turning on the TV for a little while. Also, for the husband snoring part, just push him slightly, not wake him up, but a slight movement can stop the snoring, at least giving you enough time to fall asleep. Finally, do not panic. Most people panic when it's late, they can't fall asleep, and have work early the next morning. That's the worst thing to do and it will just make you stay up longer and distract you from falling into the sleeping state. Last resort, try to get a sleeping pill prescribed. From what I hear they actually do work very well. I do not believe in medicine, so make that your absolute last resort! Good luck sleeping!

Hello Levyx22, I am so much appreciated for all the methods that you have quoted here. You really talked very professionally about the ways in solving sleeping disorder. Firstly, about watching TV... For me, I think it is not really work, because the more I pay attention to the tv programme, the more I can't fall asleep later. Further more, I do not have TV in my bedroom...Too bad right? Secondly, husband snoring... Super good method! I always do that and he would stop the snoring for a moment. If he continues, I will pull away his blanket. Such a cruel wife right? Thirdly, do not panic.... I will definitely panic when I can't sleep at the time I suppose to sleep. You are absolutely right, this thought would bothered me and of course will keep me more alert than sleeping. The last resort, sleeping pills... I am quite hesitated to take sleeping pills, because I am afraid I will too depend on it. Thanks again, Levyx22.

But I am so lucky that I do take nap in the afternoon together with my daughter, therefore I could take a rest for few hours. Sleeping alone is the best..at least do not disturbed by the snoring sound! Thanks for your tips...I guess I only could read books in the living hall and not on my bed, or else the light will definitely awake my girl.

My sleeping patterns have changed since my transition to full-time grad study. When I was still working, I usually had to sleep at around 11 pm, and wake up at around 5 am the morning after. Since a change in daily routine causes a change in sleeping patterns, it's no mystery why I'm this way. Most days, I'd just go with the flow; if I'm sleepy then I go to bed, and if I'm not, there's always work waiting to be started. About your sleeping habits, may I ask why you have to do your personal stuff at late hours? Why not shift it around and just appoint a different time of day for your me-time?
• Malaysia
2 Sep 09
Hello Rivengodwind, Totally agreed with you, change in daily routine and even occupation will affect the sleeping patterns. When I was still working, I also like you..I will go to bed about 10pm and wake up at about 8am. But with my current situation (as a stay at home mom)I have no choice than to do my personal stuff only when my girl has fall asleep at night. How I wish I have my me-time during day time, but she will definitely bother me.

I am not a good sleeper. I usually wake in the middle of the night as well. Other times when I am stressed or worried I can't sleep. Usually I put in a dvd and try to watch tv or I will surf the net or go here to Mylot. I try to lay there with my eyes close and not think of anything or try to imagine a peaceful scene to fall asleep but it never works. While I am up I will sip on some hot tea to help relax me until I feel really tired and then I go to bed. Honestly I don't think I could survive if I had to get eight hours of straight sleep at night. I'm not sure how its affecting my health but it seems my body is accustomed to getting only 5-6 hours a night. I had read somewhere that each person needs a different amount, some less and some more, I guess I need less...

For me, at this moment, shutting my eyes really tied really worked! LOL. I thought tea will helps us freshen up? Hello Andi6520, I guess you love net surfing very much right? Actually me too. For me, sometimes I do think net surfing is the main culprit that makes me can't fall asleep. My mind will think of what I have seen from the computer screen when I am lying on the bed. I love to blog too, so I will think of what will be the interesting post to be blog when I can't sleep. It is a very difficult situation if I can't fall asleep during the night. I will keep staying in the bed and try to fall asleep. Somtimes, I come out of the room and have some water or read a book and try to fall asleep. If I have tried my level best and couldn't fall asleep, then I will switch on the TV and browse for some songs or comedy shows.
