My English is ok neither bad nor very good. But in my house my father, husband, son and daughter's English knowledge is superb. They even spell odd English words very correctly and their vocabulary skills are wonderful. How about you? Are you good at spellings in English language? Do you take any special efforts for that or is it automatically in built in you or was it any inspiration from any one?

I could not say that I am very good in spelling. I know some words, and I know how to spell them, but I don't think I'm a pro. I joined the spelling bee contest in high school, luckily I got the second place, but that's because I reviewed before the event.

Before the internet...I thought I was a fairly good English speller. Today, I'm not as confident. Firstly,I feel the greater exposure to alternate spellings of words has added to the confusion(American,Canadian and British). Also constantly viewing spelling mistakes on a day to day basis appears to have an effect on what your brain recognizes as correct. I feel that reading (books),helps to provide a standard base ... for your brain to use as a reference for spelling accuracy. Stop reading accurate books....and you will end up like me ....constantly uncertain!

You are right. American English spelling and British spelling is a confusion. colour is spelt as color neighbour is spelt as neighbor, which one to follow? However they teach British spelling in our schools and I use them only.

Hi Buchi, English is my third language. So it is so-so only I could use simple English to express my feeling and ideas with my friends here only. My husband's and son’s are very much better than mine. Anyway I'm glad that my friends could still understand my expression here Since all the words I use here is simple and easy, I don’t have any spellings difficulty so far. But come across any word or vocabulary I seldom use, or unfamiliar. I would misspell them often for sure Here I would like to thank mylot for providing such good platform for me to practise my spelling as well as the writing skill frequently. I believe my writing skill would improve if I keep on typing here. It’s quite convenient that the firefox spell checker will underline the wrong spelling word typed with red dotted line. Yeah, after seeing it I could make the correction straight away. Have a nice day and happy posting!

I can read, write and spell English pretty good also. Everyone in my family is pretty good at it. It really does not take any special efforts since that is what we were tauight in school.

Hello Buchi_bulla. I think that I am good at the spelling of most of the basic English words. It is not a big problem for me. But as to those that are seldom used, I will have to look them up in a dictionary for a correct spelling. Enjoy yourself, my dear friend.

Me too. my English and spellings are quite better but of course we're not sure of our spelling with the unfamiliar words and our vocabulary is quite limited to what we've learned before as we're no longer vocabulary conscious compared to others. We are ispired and we learn from each other once our family members are good in English, in spelling and vocabulary. We're lucky to have someone to consult in case we're in doubt of our English words.
