Why do we judge people based on their music taste?

I see it all the time. We look at people differently once we discover the type of music they listen to! Think about it - when someone says they listen to rap, what is your first thought? Country? Metal? Emo? I get teased about being a Hanson fan all the time. All people think when they hear Hanson is "Mmmbop" and squeaky voices of 11 years olds. No one gives the Hanson of today a chance. They are amazing guys and are trying to do some great things, like teaming up with TOMS shoes, building wells and schools in Africa....just amazing people! No matter what people say, I continue to listen to them. Do you get judged on your music choice? Have you ever stopped listening to a person/group/genre because of it? (I hope not...)

I wouldn't stop listening to music I liked just because someone else thought I should (that would probably make me play it more... & louder!!) There is such a wide range of music out there - some I like and some I think is utter crap but, each to their own. Some people fit the 'stereotype' of a particular type of music but I dont like to categorize people and put labels on them because of their musical tastes or the way they dress. What category would a Hanson fan fit into BTW

Hanson fall into the soft rock category, but I listen to country and a lot of other things too. I also don't like to stereotype others - its not right and most of the time not accurate either! Thanks for responding!

honestly i am a metalhead through and through, and i am constantly being judged. nto only do i have to worry about being racially profiled, now i also have to worry about those who see me as some kind of devil worshipping, psycho in training because of the way that i dress. it is silly that we judge others on such things. to be honest with you i am not a fan of rap. my sister who does not like metal at all, but she reckons that rap is the devil's music and not metal. in my experience, metal does not incite violence like hip hop and rap does. i feel safer in the middle of a mosh pit than i ever would in the middle of a rap concert. i went to a 3 day heavy metal festival and did not know a soul, there i was amidst 100,000 people and it was great. heavy metal fans are the best, because we are all about the music. i was made to feel at home by everyone because we were part of the same tribe. with hip hop and rap there is none of that solidarity, just mainly a lot of posturing and threatening because one was disrespected or some such nonsense, and then there is the senseless violence that is incited by the music. i am talking from experience. i have never had to leave a metal gig because violence broke out. i have had to leave 2 such hiphop/rap events when things got too heated because of beef bewteen people wtf. so as much as i hate to judge, i am more drawn to my type of tribe because i know that we will have a shared interest in one of the most important things in my life and that is music.

I am not a metal or rap fan, but I understand what you are talking about when you say people are about the music. Thats what the civilized Hanson fans are like (You have to ignore the teenage girls that are screaming their heads off). To me life is nothing without music and I always have something going - and usually it is Hanson or Rob Thomas or Lady Antebellum. I dont get any bad feedback from Hanson, just a "Are you kidding?!?!" I am glad that you had fun on your 3 day festival - it sounds fun! Thanks so much for responding!!

I'm sure as a metalhead that you will know about the very violent lyrics of many heavy metal bands. People go on what people are like. I see people who are into heavy metal or are a goth and they do seem intimidating sometimes and generally very unhappy.

That's not fair, how can one person judge another by simply checking the taste of his or her music. it's actually in the attitude and how you deal with the person, and not his/her likes on music. I met a nerd once, but he wasn't into science but he was part of the band and a bit of a bachelor..

The reason is that people's music taste says a lot about them in terms of what kind of person they are. People who like a wide range of music are seen as easier to get along with than people who narrow minded tastes. This is because they have a perspective of different styles.

I can understand that, but its still annoying. lol. I have a wide range and so I am open to things, which might be why this bugs me so much. I give just about anything a chance (Sorry, if they have a screechy voice I'm out! lol). Thanks for your input!
