Hello apples99, I had the same question when I began college class, and the answer it no. You will need to use Microsoft Office to submit your papers and assignments. If you are short of money right now, don't panic, MS Office can be downloaded instantly by providing your email address, and you will have 90 days to pay for it. When the 90 days expires, a window will pop onto your screen and ask you to "convert" (pay). If you can't afford it then, simply remove it from your computer and download it again using a different email address. I use the student version, it was cheaper and had all the functions I needed. Be sure to look at them all; as I recall, I paid about $USD99.00 Go to microsoft dot com and search for the office downloads. Have fun in your upcoming classes, I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience.

It depends on the file types you'll be using. Open Office could read only up to MS Office 2003 documents so you really have to take that into consideration. It would be good to ask your professor what file types that online class will be using and take a hint from there.
