war on...fails

not the war on terror (although it's hard to see how war on a concept can be lost, or indeed won...) but the war on drugs. this is a fairly old topic but the brazilian president has recently spoken out saying the hardline war on drugs, in particular cannabis, hasn't worked and the way forward is decriminalisation. in this way drug lords could be dealt with rather than users. what do you think? what, if any, drugs should be decrimialised and do you think this would help? http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/sep/06/brazil-cardoso-war-drugs-decriminalisation

JB, this is like anything else in life: If what you are doing isn't working, then try something else. I personally think that cannabis should be legal in the US, but that is my own opinion. I think it would help everyone involved, and allow for it to be regulated, and safer for people to use, and would be a huge cash cow for the government. But, that is just me.

trying something else is a bit on the sensible side though, and we are talking about governments, whose policy seems basically to be if it's not working then keep at it - you never know. anyway i think a lot of people would agree with you on the subject of cannabis

i'd go along with that, since when has banning anything stopped people using it? but again i'm not sure if governments are allowed to implement policies that make sense....

Point well taken. I guess I should change my stance, and say that we need more enforcement of this ban.

i think it would be very effective. Legalize, regulate and tax. Nobody will want it anymore.
