Doctors have the last word at that because it much depends on the cause of anemia. But to all anemia patients, besides other things, they give iron. In my country they give a lot of liver to woman who have given birth and thus lost blood. Liver has a lot of iron and it can be cooked in many ways. Another food that we use here is to make a sort of gelatine by boiling a lot animal legs (beef, pork or chicken). It trastes wonderful and looks beautiful if you add spices, fresh peas, olives and cookeed peeled swet peppers. I hope this helps!

It surely sounds great and I bet that it also tastes great. So basically the best source of iron is liver, point noted. Thanks for your response.

YEs. It is iron. Anmd there are iron tablets too, but I´m old and I have the suspicion that pills are not as good as the real thing. Besides, pills are not as nice to eat as that gelatine I was talking about, for instance. I di that many times when I have guests: you put it in a mold and then serve it over shredded lettuce. YUMMY!!! As for liver, I make an awesome pate with chicken livers. I boil the livers with a bay leaf, peeled sweet peppers. When done I put them in the blender adding slowly some of the water (don´t cook them in too much water). I blend then the paste with butter. It´s a wonderful appetizer. I also make beef liver steaks: I like them with crushed garlic and fry them in a very heated skillet so it´s cruchy in the outside and soft in the middle.

It's a lack of iron in the blood I had that when I was a kid! Liver is a good source of iron, one of the best. There are also liquids the you take a spoonful of each day! Once it gets built up it usually goes away! tdemex

Spinach and broccoli are also good sources of iron. You can also usually take a multi-vitamin to take care of your need for iron - you can usually get at least 50% in a regular ole' vitamin. Otherwise, you can buy iron supplements - but I have to warn you: they're pretty gross! He should just make sure he's gettin 100% of his iron need. Tell him to read nutritional labels, take daily multi-vitamins, and eat green leafy vegetables like spinach, and he should be fine.

First, is that your daughter in the picture? She is very cute. You are right about the iron supplements they are pretty gross. When it comes to eating vegetables he is just not into it. Even the doctor warned him that if he continues like this then he might face many problems in the future. Thank you for your response. Take care

Apples are rich in iron and there are iron supplements which help in improving the iron content in the body.Vegetable like ladies finger is also said to be iron rich.Oil and wheat bran and paprika also help in increasing iron content in the body. Clams, pork liver, chicken liver and mussels are also iron rich foods.Iron helps in reducing anemia hence intake of these foods will reduce iron deficiency.

Whenever I am anemic my Dr tells me to take an iron supplement (Ferrous Sulfate). After my first child, I was extremely anemic. I had a lot of blood loss during birth. At first the Dr's tried to get my iron up while I was still in the hospital. It wasn't working so it was then decided to do a blood transfusion. I still had to take a supplement for a while after though. Spinach and broccoli have a lot of iron in them. Has he seen his Dr?

Yes he has seen a doctor but he really doesn't eat any vegetables. That's the main problem. Thank you for your response.

A high iron diet is essential. Liver works best and of course there are supplements. However, the necessary diet would also depend on the type of anemia he has. There is the type that is genetic and the type that's caused by poor diet. His doctor should be able to pinpoint what exactly he has but to advise him, a high iron diet to start should help.
