Why Do Secret Service Agents Wear Dark Glasses?

You always see secret service agents wearing dark glasses, an ear piece and dark suits. It seems that is the universal kit for all secret service agents the world over. I can understand the suits are to make them look smart and they are some sort of uniform. The ear piece I understand are for communications. But why the dark glasses? Are they for intimidating people? or are they x-ray glasses like some people suggest?

Trademark for coolness!...Maybe dark glasses are their way of identification, so people may identify then as agents, hehe... But honestly, maybe the reason is for them to cover their eyes, to hide their emotions since they must totally appear poker-faced. This can help their missions to be successful because being attached to someone can compromised their jobs.

It does make them look cool doesn't. But I think you are right, it may just be there to hide their eyes.

I would suppose the dark glasses is because they have to keep their eyes protected from the sun because they are out in the open most often. Another reason is that once you take off your glasses, they can see more of whether your eyebrow is a bit gray, the shape of your eyes, how far the eyebrow is from your top eyelash, and of course the color of your eye. In other words, it is to prevent anyone from identifying them, terrorists for instance, so after guarding the president or poltiical leader, they can change into their regular clothes without someone coming and shooting them.

It sure is. I saw the one with Clint Eastwood and they had to run besides the president's car. So anyone could take a pock shot at one of them. And if they missed, they would want to get them again and if someone had a personal grudge against a man who was a secret agent, well he would have a hard time finding out and I can't see him asking "say you don't happen to be George Adelson. I know he is a secret agent, but I really hate him because he cut down my tree," etc.

I agree with you. They probably need those glasses for protection from the sun and for disguise. It is a really dangerous job.

I really have no idea either. I think they mainly wear them to hide their eyes. They do not want to be able to actually be identified when they are not wearing them out in public. That is just what I think.

I think you are right. A lot of the respondents gave the same reason.

I assume the dark eye glasses are in not letting others know where they are seeing, so that they can watch anything or anybody closely to get some clues. Other reason is this, people should not identify them and be alert.

It hides their eyes so they can survey the area without people knowing they are being watched. I think it works to their advantage.

They want to observe people, at the same time making themselves impervious to external scrutiny.Eyes show off quite a lot of our personality. It is necessary for them to remain incognito if they have to be successful in doing their job.

I think that is a reason for the glasses. Some people also suggested it is a protection from the sun.

...Hi 2wicelot, I think the dark glasses are thought to be a sort of disguise, You can't see their eyes, so they could be looking any where, which I also think is part of the reason. Also the glasses let you know they are possibly the Secret Service, and you should be mindful of what you are doing, in whatever situation they are in. I think it's cool with the glasses, but I wonder it they would be more effective if they were more icognito and did not wear the glasses. The other thing would be, perhaps they wear them for protection from the sun, that simple. X-ray glasses? I think we would have heard of the invention of such glasses, or maybe not. Take care.

I think those x-ray glasses probably don't exist in real life anyway. I think you are right, they may just want people to identify them as agents and be wary of what they do around them. Probably it is to draw people's attention away from some other agents who are in plain clothing and embedded within the crowd.

I think the primary reason is to prevent sun overexposure to the eyes as well to allow them to see clearly no matter the situation. The army issues you sunglasses for similar reasons. The fact that it hides your eyes from the sight of others doesn't hurt either. Finally it does cause a greater intimidation factor. People in general are uncomfortable around folks in power suits and dark glasses. It lends them an aura of mystery and menace that can't discounted in a bodyguard.

Those are excellent reasons. Before I started this discussion I never thought it could be for protection from the sun. Nice.

Probably for the reasons others have mention, protection from the sun, to hide their identities, to look more ominous, and I would add to hide the directions in which they are looking.

Yeah that is true. With the glasses on it would be almost impossible to know where they are looking. Smart move.

Well... Not being a secret service agent, I can only guess at it. I'm assuming it's no different than people who play out-field position in baseball. In sunny days, they don't wanna miss what's going on around them by sun glares that they need to pay attention to everything. I'm sure there are also situations where they don't want people knowing where they're looking. I don't know. Those are the only 2 reasons I could think of.

I never thought it could just be for protection from the sun. And that is the most obvious reason, lol. Nice deduction.

I would assume the dark glass are for a disguise. If you wear dark glasses people can not see the color of your eyes. Maybe they think that it makes them look more forceful. I do not think the glasses are x-ray or they would know if someone is hiding behind a door or in a closet I would think.

Yes that is a good reason. They may just want some form of disguise. I have a feeling there are no such things as an x-ray glasses anyway.

Hi,wicelot,that is a interesting topic,as far as i am comcerned the secret service agents wear dark glasses because it can makes them more handsome than before and it also can help them to finish their job more effectivly.people do not know what are they looking for when the dark glasses were weared on secret service agents.
@2wicelot (2945)

That is interesting. You think it is just to make them look good and that would distract people. Nice thought.

Maybe it is because they look so doggone cool and intimidating. Do they really wear them in real life too? I have never met a secret service agent, nor do I want to. All too high intrigue for this country bumpkin'. Do people really think that they are x-ray glasses (runs to find nicer undies).
@2wicelot (2945)
24 Sep 09
They probably do wear them in real life too if the movies are anything to go by. But I seriously doubt there is such a thing as x-ray glasses.

I never seen a secret service agent before.So i guess they might be want to hide their identity to the public? I am sure that they don't want to be recognize during a mission too. Another explanation is that it is only the stereotype image created by the media.We seen this a lot of time in the television show and movie.They don't look so cool without sunglasses isn't it? lol

Probably the media is more responsible for creating the image we think of when we think of secret service agents.

2wicelot, Sunglasses are just another form of protection when they are performing their duties under the sun. It is not any make up or uniform - these are just for sun protection.

I don`t think they are x-ray glasses . I belive that they wear dark glasses just to hide their look . Like there are cameras in banks for example, with dark glass , just beause you should not see where the camera it`s seeing in there . the same principle it`s with dark glasses at secret service agents . Maybe they really have x-ray galsses , but what i`ve said it`s true . That`s the only resonable answer .

i think no government would give x ray glasses to many agents. too costly. i think, you know, they have to be unrecognizable because of the sensitivity of the cases they handle and the security of themselves and their loved ones that's why they have to look the same the world over: dark glasses and suits.

I think because they don't want somebody to see their eyes and if their eyes have been identified then it is easier for everybody to know him and he could not be called secret agent anymore.

Wearing eyeglasses, especially the dark ones, can be intimidating. But I think that secret service agents wear dark glasses to avoid having people around them notice where they are looking at to avoid the possibility of a failed surveillance mission. It's like Person X is under surveillance and he notices Agent Y staring intently on him then Person X runs away like a maniac! Btu with the glasses on, there is a 65% of it not happening..hehehe (odd idea!)

Yeah it sounds a bit odd but it makes sense. How did you get the figure 65%?
