Diwali and crackers

Diwali is a great day for the Hindus as much a Easter/Christmas and Eid is for the Christians and Muslims respectively. But Diwali is also a day when there is so much of pollution being generated through burning crackers. Do you think this is a good practice? What alternative method would you suggest so that people can celebrate this important festival without causing more pollution?
