My cat doesn't have them, but my carpet sure does. I recently had water seeping into my first floor apt and this created all sorts of new bugs...but, did this also breed fleas? My window above the "swamp" (which has since dried up)sits even with the grass, and my screens get covered when the lawn mower guy comes by. Is it possible these fleas did not come from my indoor, never touched the real ground cat?

There are a lot of ways for fleas to enter your home. First, the eggs could have already been there. Secondly you might not even realize it but sometimes they can come in on your clothes... also mowing the lawn will stir them up and bring them into your home. If your cat is like mine, they don't have the flea problem because they aren't allowed outside. One thing before I forget, make sure that after they deal with your fleas, throw out the vacuum cleaner bag!! If you have a paper vacuum cleaner bag, the fleas and or their eggs will survive in there and the next time you vacuum you could re-infest your apartment. Also, sprinkle some borax in the new bag you put on the vacuum. The borax laundry additive will dry out the fleas and their eggs and prevent re-infestation. It is also something that you can use on your carpet directly, sweeping it into the fibers of the carpet and this will dry up the eggs and the fleas. It sucks that you're getting charged for the exterminator. The land lord could have at least gone halves with you on it. Oh, also make sure that you and the cat are out of the apartment when they spray. While the exterminator may say that the stuff is safe for the cat, don't chance any contact with the stuff the exterminator uses. There is never any telling what the cat could be allergic to...

Thank you so much for your response. I believe the eggs were already in the carpet, and the lawnmower man blowing grass in my windows...and I agree that I should not have had to pay for to exterminate...could have been very costly and a repeated process. But, as luck would have it...I covered my little apt in dawn dishwashing liquid. (soaking sheets and light weight fabrics, and that seemed to kill or frighten them away...and I vacuumed a lot, emptying my canister after each us. I passed the flea inspection, so now my landlord won't have to hit me up for such costs. Of course, I do still have fleas...I will keep working at it...for my benefit, as my cat is still not even feeling it. :)

I had this problem less than two weeks ago!!! But it was the cat that caused it, my lovely house cat got outside through the bathroom window and i found him jumping around with a horrid stray cat in the back garden!! i was livid, 1 Week later he was at the vets to be checked out after his housebreak stint and i was told he had fleas!! I then had to go home and check my dog, who also had caught fleas from the cat!!, I had to buy both treatments for the dog and the cat at 50 pounds than i had to pay an extra 25 pound for a spray that you use in the whole house that kills the whole cycle of the fleas, I will tell you that it worked! and 2 weeks later we are flea free! as an extra precaution i also bought a flea collar that i wrapped round the inside of my hoover (never put a flea collar on your cat or dog!) which ment any eggs i hoovered up would be killed when they hatched, I know its expensive but its the only effective way of killing the infestation in your home.

My landlord is sending pest control on Friday...at my cost, which sucks. But, at this point, I would give anything to be flea free. My cat can be treated, and that seems to work for her...but not for me. thanks for your response. I can hardly believe how quickly they spread and how many. It's nice to have others that can identify, and school me on fleas. :)

Hi Lybra, They could have come from almost anywhere and possibly were already in your carpet as eggs. The thing with flea eggs is that they like movement. So the more movement across the carpet, the more it stimulates them to hatch. Hopefully, you have your cat on flea protection, as this will help kitty to not become infested. If you don't have the cat on flea prevention, then talk to your vet about ones you can purchase from them. The over-the-counter kind at Walmart (Hartz, etc.) really don't do anything against fleas. They chase them off, perhpas, but don't kill or sterilize them, so that the lifecycle is stopped. Flea medications from your vet will take care of the issue. Good luck! :)

Thank you so much for your response. I am in dispute with my landlord currently over this matter. Someone told me dawn dishwashing liquid kills fleas...so I am spritzing my apartment and everything in it now. I do not like chemicals...and a lot of them don't really work. so far it seems the dawn is helping. Have you ever heard about this dawn dishwashing rememdy?
