Turn the Light off!!!

Light switch - Bedroom light switch
United States
October 14, 2009 1:23pm CST
Hi mylotters. I have this problem with my husband. It seems that if he sees a light switch that it is suspose to be on. No really!!..He can come in from work and 15 minutes after he is home I look around and all the lights are on. He goes to bathroom and leaves the light on. He goes into the bedroom and leaves the light on. I guess you get the point now. Does anyon else have these kind of problems? You live with someone that is always leaving the light on when they leave the room.

Personally speaking, sometimes I don't turn the light off when I leave a room, especially in the evening. I don't think such conduct should easily attribute to a kind of problem. I was often told that turning on and off frequently would shorten the service life of the light, which means I need to buy new lights frequently. So in my view, if I'm sure that I may go back to the room some time later, I usually leave the light on. Of course, if I'm going to leave the house, I will certainly turn all the lights off.

I use the guideline that if I am going to be out of the room for an hour or more, then I will turn the light out. I buy the compact fluorescent lights too. They do last better if you do not turn them on and off a lot.

Hi Simon I have heard that about switching on and off. But if you are not going to be back in that room for awhile like Garden said then I don't see a reason to leave that light on all the time. Thanks for sharing Simon and you have a great day. Don't forget to smile today. It is good for the soul.

When my cousin was 17,she came and stayed with us for a while. Every time I turned around she had left a light on, a door open, the toilet lid up, etc. I guess she just grew up with different standards. Not to mention had no experience with actually PAYING THE BILLS!!! lol Nowadays, it's more the children leaving a trail of things behind them, toys, jackets, shoes and socks, school things, etc. They're actually pretty good about turning off lights.

Hi dawn I know what you mean. When my grandkids come over they will turn the lights off before hubby does. We have been married for almost 7 years now and together 8 years. He know how I hate this but I just can't get it thru his head to turn the darn lights off when he lives the room..LOL

I am Mrs. Frugal when it comes to the use of electricity but it does pay of in a reduction of bills. I turn everything off and remove plugs from sockets etc.to conserve. My children learnt too from a young age to conserve. Out here we pay th most for electricity - more than the developed nations of the world. I actually start palpitating when the envelope comes containing the bill.

I live on an Island in the Caribbean so I do not have to worry about heat but occasionally I would like to turn on an air conditioner! I was from the U.K. but have lived here for donkey years.

Hi knight Good to see you my friend. I don't have a problem with some of the lights being on at night. It is just funny that when he goes into the bathroom he will of course turn the light on but it is when he comes out that the lights are still on...LOL..AT night we will have some of the lights on but if we are not in the kitchen then that light doesn't need to be on. He just thinks that when he sees a light switch that it needs to be in the on position..LOL..Thanks for sharing and you have a nice day..

I'm glad to say that I don't have that problem in my house. Even my 4 year old daughter knows to turn off the lights when she leaves the room. I'm sorry that your husband leaves the lights on all the time. Does he like paying the electric bill?

Well its not a problem for someone you're living with but a problem for earth. Yeah, this is not one of the times I over-exaggerate stuff. I mean leaving lights and equipments on when you're not using them is a blow directly to nature. We're hurting nature that minute fraction of a bit when we're producing electricity. Oh yeah, it hurts your pocket and leads to overload and shut downs at the electricity plant. Sit him down and let him know. Take care.

Hi summer Good to hear from you. How are you doing today? Im not a big light person either. When night starts to fall I will usually have the livingroom light on a small light on the stove on in the kitchen. Other than I don't have all the lights on. I can control the switches unlike my hubby...LOL..Thanks for sharing and have a great day.

Hi britt Im glad to hear that he is getting better at it. I have been working on my hubby for 8 years now. Maybe it is his age that makes it harder for him to learn a new trick...LOL..Hey what can I say, I love the goofy guy. Thanks for sharing and have a nice day.

No, I do not have that problem. My husband use to once in a while leave a light on but not no more. I would just ask him if there was a reason he did not shut the light off. If he said know than I would say okay I guess I can shut off this time. After doing that a few times he learn to shut the lights off when he leaves the room and is not going to need that light on anymore.

Well, it seldom happens in my family. Most of the time when it happens is just that they forgot to close them unintentionnaly. But my family will say it out to make sure we always remember to close our lights to save energy if we did not use them. Mostly, the lights which we always forgot to close is the bathroom.

Hi Mike You are right. It usually is the bathroom. I wonder why that is. Even the kids have the tendency to forget to the bathroom light off. Maybe a person gets so caught in the bathroom duties that when they live the room their just excited about what just happen that the light is farthest thing from their mind..LOL Thanks for sharing and have a good day.

Hi star Oh yes when I come in I do to turn the lights on. I actually will go thru the camper and turn all the lights on to look around. But I do turn them back off when I get done with that. At night I will leave a light on in the kitchen area. Now if that was my husband he would leave all the lights on all the time for no reason..Thanks for sharing and have a great day.

Hi GardenGerty How are you today? Great I hope. Do you think that it is a man thing as well? I beginning to think that it is. Like I had said before, I think he has a magnet in him that draws him to a off position light switch..LOL..I told him that if we find us a place to rent that he will have to keep the lights off. So we have started practing on that now..LOL..Thanks for sharing and have a great day.

My mom drives my dad nuts doing that. She'll leave every light in the house on. He gets so exasperated. I find myself going into any room she's been in after she's left it, and turning out all the lights. My dad is the only working right now, so he is really trying to keep the bills low. My mom just never turns the lights off! Today my sister came to visit, and she and I were both at my parent's house. Everywhere she went in the house, SHE left the lights on. I knew she would get angry with me if I pointed it out, so I just "followed" her around after she would leave a room and turn off the lights for her.

Hi AmbiePam Are you doing good today? That was sweet of you to follow her and turn out the lights. Yeah you are probably right she would have been a little upset with you because of dad telling her that all the time. I don't what it is that makes them do this but I know one thing. It is a job to train my hubby. He is still in training..LOL

My kids do this constantly. My hubby does it but with one light & that's the one that goes to the top of the back steps & down into the basement. If you are in the kitchen you can't really tell if the light is on when the kitchen light is on. So I"m always turning that darn thing off. I wouldn't mind so much if he would switch it to one of those CFL bulbs but hasn't & I'm not attempting a ladder in a spot that barely has enough room for a kitchen chair to be situated to change it in the first place. So if you haven't already swich them over to the CFL's atleast that way they won't cost as much if they are running so much. Or nag them to turn them off or they have to sacrafice something else or make a rule of only so many items on at one time & everything else has to get turned off or unplugged.

Hi Snugglebunnies Good to hear from you. I never thought about those kind of bulbs. You have a very good point. I will have to invest in those. We are looking for a place to rent and that is when I will get those CFL's bulbs. That will help a little bit. Im also teaching him the new trick of turning off the light when he leaves the bathroom..LOL..Thanks for sharing and you have a great day my friend.

When I walked out I hollowed back in and told him to turn the light off when he came out. Of course he said yes honey..Then while we was sitting there I looked and guess what the light was still on. LOL. Thanks for sharing and you have a wonderful day my friend..

Do I ever? Is it a husband thing? My mom used to complain about this with my dad (she still may, but since I live away now, she doesn't vent to me about this anymore). Now, my husband does the same thing. He's actually worse than our 3-yr-old daughter. She, at least, sometimes remembers to turn things off. :)
