Public speaking: do you find this terrifying?

Many people I know are gifted conversationalists but when called to speak in public, they are paralyzed by fear. This results to mental blocks and difficulties in saying what they really want to say. Not all people are good public speakers, unlike many politicians who will talk at the sight of a microphone. How about you? maybe you are a good one, share your secrets...

svrider88, I hate those stupid "get to know you" games! I'm not afraid of public speaking, but I'm pretty lucky because it is the most common phobia. Thomas Jefferson feared public speaking. It's really extremely common. I get butterflies, but I look forward to it and enjoy speaking in public.

I am horrible even in front of a group of my peers. I get so nervous and stumble over my words. Also sometimes my face turns red like I'm embarrassed. I hate it. The worst was always when I was in high school and college and the teachers always had to play get to know you games. I was terrified. Now I'm not as bad, but still feel very uncomfortable.

You are not unique, I'm sure many people find it uncomfortable and just wish that they will not called to stand up before an audience and to some talking. cheers!

Me, I don't find it terrifying, but the fact is that I get mind blockage although I don't get scared at the idea of speaking in public. So, theoretically speaking, I am scared of talking in public, although I think I don't.

i think i was exposed at a very young age... i have been hosting programs, joining oratorical contests, debates... so even if i still feel the stage fright no matter what contests i have joined.. i always appear confident on stage...

Your early exposure must have taught you a lot. I agree that although we have the confidence, still there is a little of that strange feeling of stage fright or whatever. This will constantly remind us to the best we could. cheers!

I got an award as a debater of the year when i graduated college. First, i don't agree that politicians are good speakers, most of them are good liars. Well, i think the secret there is to internalize your speech that way you will have a good grasp of what you are talking about, just in case there are distractions during your speech you will not forget anything. i hope this can help.
