Yes, it happenened to me two times! After that I bought a portable harddisk and stored everything on it so the third my system broke down, I had everything on my device. But still, the loss of all these informations, music, videos, photos of trips, all gone. But you know, it's not that bad, you just have to check that you have a good antivirus, enough RAM, and a computer that can take a lot.

I lost quite a bit of information the other week when Windows crashed. I have an HP machine and it is supposed to have a recovery partition but there was apparently nothing there and the only alternative was to buy another copy of Windows and reinstall. I had XP but that is no longer available, so I was forced to buy Vista. I have to admit that I panicked and forgot that I have a bootable version of Ubuntu on a CD. I should have used that to recover my data since it was all there - just not accessible, since Windows was not working. As I have most of my data stored on an external hard drive, I didn't lose anything that wasn't replaceable (mostly my photos and a few documents of historical interest) but I did lose a few things that I was currently working on, which was a pain. System crashes and hard disk and other media failures are something that are bound to happen at some time. Everyone should understand that they are inevitable - you WILL lose your data at some time in your life - and, if you have data which is important to you, it is really down to your own carelessness if you don't regularly archive/copy it to other media. Make sure that the media you use is the most reliable possible (for example, BRANDED CD/R or DVD/R not RW media! CDs and DVDs are cheap and, if you value your data, it's worth paying a little extra for branded media). For safety's sake, you should have at least two copies, preferably on different media. Many people don't bother to backup their data because it takes time. If you have data which is irreplaceable, NO time spent in backing it up is wasted!

i have done many stuff including graphics, pictures, and writings which i lost due to my computer caught viruses and spyware, and i had to reinstall windows all over again. and i lost everything on my hard drive. that is why it is important to make a copy of everything on a dvd or cd so that you can recopy it on ur computer if you lose it in the future.

I've experienced this once before. Actually it was an accident. I want to format another partition but accidentally formatted my partition that contains my media collection without even realizing it. Luckily I manage to recover it back using a recovery software. If not I would be 'sitting ducks' looking at my empty hard disk. LOL!
