More qualified than Supervisor

If you are more qualified than your supervisor who feels threatened that you might take over his job, how best would you assure him that you are not after his job.

I think you should just not step outside of the.. responsibilities and duties of YOUR job position , and continue to treat him like your boss (without being rebellious or showing him up and making him uncomfortable in any way) and eventually he'll take the hint.
