Have you ever made your own soda (pop)?

Earlier today, I read an article recommending five small kitchen items to help you save money on food costs. I already have and frequently use four of them (coffee maker, bread machine, water filter, and slow cooker). I'd never even heard of the fifth, though: a soda maker! In case you've never seen one either, they pump CO2 from small cartridges into refillable bottles of water. No electricity needed! Then you add your choice of flavoring, fruit juice, or syrup. I think this is one of the coolest ideas ever! I unfortunately love soda, even knowing how bad it is for me, so I really like the idea of making my own with healthier flavoring and less waste from packaging. I'm not sure that it would save me money, because they're expensive, but it might be a groovy gift or a good sale find. ;) Have you ever used a soda maker? Do you think it would save you money to pay between $75 and $120 for one (plus cartridges and flavoring)?

I have not made it, but I have had the homemade soda. There is a guy who works with my husband who has one and we have been over to his house a couple of times and he just loves that machine. He mixes the fizzy water with a little bit of cranberry juice and it tastes really good, and cranberry juice is good for you so it was extra nice. I think it is a good idea to get one of those, my husband is addicted to soda and I am addicted to diet soda and it really can not be that healthy for either one of us. I might like ask for that for Christmas.

Thank you for this valuable feedback! I had wondered whether homemade soda would taste good, but I didn't think to ask! I imagine it would depend upon the flavoring added. A spoonful of frozen juice concentrate would probably be tasty! It would definitely be healthier than the Dr. Pepper I drink so often. I am considering asking for one of these for Christmas as well. That is how I got most of my other kitchen gadgets. :)
