is this true even if you have a 1GB memory card? because Im planning to install a game emulator on my phone with 1GB memory, and I was just wondering if it will slow down my phone. My friends say it will not affect the phone but I just want to make sure.

Well, from my experience it's like this. Too many applications installed would slow your phone a bit, but if your memory card is 1gb and the only remaining space capacity is about 200mb and below, that's the time where your phone will start to slow, especially if the remaining would be 100 or below that will pissed you off. What kind of phone are you using? If your phone can handle about 2gb you should might as well buy this, 1gb is still small for me.

Check your phone here: phonearena.com. Check for some reviews on how much memory they can handle. Oh! By the way, I have 49 applications installed in my phone, the one that makes my phone slow is the number of pictures, videos, and songs. If you have a lot, this will surely slow your phone, I have 250 pictures (I've deleted a lot already), 192mb of videos, and 308mb of songs (which is one of the reason why my phone is slow).

really? so it's like it's the pictures and videos that make the phone slow because of the space they use?

memory stick will increase your space but ram is place where your application is processed all applkication have some files in phone memory which require initiation that files render the phone slow

Normal features and mobile appl don't transform your mobile phone in a slow amchine from a speed point of view surely it depends from appl...as emulator can be possible because normally these appls will use much ram in your device and so speed can be affected!!

Indeed, just like installing more softwares slow downs the PC, the phone becomes slow too when you install too many applications. It's just as mentioned before, applications need RAM to run, and no matter how big your memory card/stick is, it does not contribute to the RAM size. hence the memory needed to run the applications is still the same. Too many applications contribute to the defragmentation and corruption of the phone's registry file too.

I have a Nokia 5800 and it has a lot applications installed in it but so far it did not slow my phone down. I guess it depends on what phone you use because my friend used to have a Nokia N73 and even if she has 2GB memory card, applications slow down her phone. I think it is still best to avoid getting close to the memory limit of your phone to avoid slowing it down.

How many applications you have on a device does not matter. Just so were all on the same track I will be referencing to Windows Mobile Devices. You could fill your 1 GB SD card full of applications and it will not slow down your device. What slows your device is applications that run in the background. These sorts of applications use memory and CPU power which in turn slows down your device.
