Regionalism: Another form of racism!!

India

I cann`t just understand what is happening all around us. For long time, racism has been a way to divide people. But now, the people are being divided based on their region, mainly by the politicians. I have an example, in Mumbai, Bal Thakrey promoted the view that people from other parts must not be allowed to enter Mumbai just because they are snatching away jobs from the native Mumbains (aren`t Mumbains that much capable to get good jobs), this caused violence in the city. Now, Sachin, regarded as the God of cricket, said that he is first an Indian then a Marathi, and Bal Thakrey openly threatened him. Moreover, some class of Mumbains are also supporting that this threat to Sachin is legible. Do you think this is right? Don`t you think such politicians and their supporters who spread violence in the name of racism and regionalism should be regarded as terrorists and be shot down just like terrorists should be? Are you a supporter of dividing country for the selfish motives of some terrorists in the faces of politicians?

Hi Ashu, you'll have to fill me in a bit here. Are these people advocating break off states become their own little countries? How does a country of that population keep together with so many different languages in play? Are there some regions which have exempted themselves from the malaise of corruption?

Hi, thea. Thanks for your interest. Actually, the politician i am talking about belongs mainly to the politics of an Indian state, Maharashtra that has a city named Mumbai(the financial capital of India). This politician tries to make people of the country divide by saying that "the people from other states are snatching jobs from the people of Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai city, that is raising the unemployment in region." He says, " Don`t let them get these jobs. Stop them by hook or crook otherwise you(the native people of Mumbai city) will die of unemployment". That is, he is indirectly saying, if anybody from a state outside Maharashtra gets a job here, oust him/her from the state, even forcibly, if required. He is not advocating a break-off state or a separate independent state but he advocates a SELF-state. Although, the major class of the people does not support his thoughts and he thus lost the assembly elections this time, but there are some groups of people (some from well-educated families) who not only support but also spread violence under these thoughts from him. And, this is what really hurts. As for unity, as i already said, major part of population does not support his views, that is why India is called around the world as a nation with "Unity in Diversity". But, certainly, corruption is still there, to varying degrees. As for the financial capital Mumbai city, it is nearly free of corruption where such politicians can only influence people by such nonsense talks only, but not by money or political influence.

Yeah. But, the problem is that if nothing is done in fear of any violence from his supporters, then his continual raising of this nonsense theory will poison more minds. After all, the human mind is distracted under regular persuasion, however sensible the mind may be. Thanks for your views. Happy Mylotting!!

Which educated sane patriot would think of dividing the country on regional lines? However, there is no dearth of educated, perfectly sane patriotic Indians here…what is lacking is the willpower to rise above petty issues and see the larger picture here. For way too long have our politicians dangled the carrots before us and for long have we pampered them at our own cost. But the moment the country is attacked from outside, you’ll see all Indians are united because the threat is very great! So as long as its an internal problem of politicians and their false rhetoric, people really don’t sit up and take notice…though I feel threatening Sachin was taking it too far! After all, what has Bal Thakerey done for Mumbai (except for insulting the cosmopolitan nature of this great city) that he dares to tell Sachin how he should react to his Maharashtrain roots?

Yeah, i fully agree with your views. These politicians have for long used the policy that the Britishers used to rule over India. These politicians have been the main cause that the fastest growing Indian economy has not been growing that fast as it could with the talented youth it has. But, i cann`t just understand where has all the intelligence of the educated India gone that many of them are supporting these people. As for Sachin, i think he knows much much better than Bal Thackrey how he should react to his people. Thanks for your valuable response. Happy Mylotting!!

It is a naive viewpoint to think that that is racism. It is simply a representative trying to do what is best for his region. If jobs are being taken away from an area by outsiders, it is worse for that area. Like in the US, Mexicans come and are hired because they are paid so little. This takes jobs away from Americans and hurts our society and economy.

Ah, you may be right that the person is doing this just because he thinks this is the best for the region. But, let me tell you this is nothing else than racism. Firstly, promoting violence just because the outsiders are gripping the jobs is no intelligence. Also, are the inhabitants of the region not that able to improve their chances on their own performance and intelligence skills. Secondly, why do we view his act in terms of betterment of a region (Alienating people can never benefit a region-the business of the place will decline). Cann`t we take it as a alienating measure in terms of the whole nation or in terms of the whole world. Thirdly, if the others are filling jobs in their region, who has forbade them to take up jobs in the others` region. This is intermingling and migration. Just find jobs that suit your skills anywhere around the world. Trying to reserve the jobs by force or by a reservation policy is never going to benefit the region and also the world as a unit. So, in this era of stiff competition, thinking that others have taken your job is just thinking like an illiterate in this world. Why don`t you think that i lacked in some of the qualities needed for the job, as is usually the case. The low wages criteria is just a nonsense thought spread by those who didn`t get jobs just because they were not capable enough. I tell you, no organisation is going to harm its interests by hiring inefficient people just for saving some money in terms of their employees` wages. Moreover, just a matter of view. Thanks for your response. Happy Mylotting!!
