I am in the process of starting up my own forum, specialising in a certain field. If you were to start your own forum up, what would you base it on ? Would you try and make it a general forum covering as much as you can, in a similar way to MyLot or would you try and find a niche target market with less people visiting but a loyal base of members who regulary contribute ? What Catergories or subsections would you include ?

Hi jason1308, Long time no see. When I had plans to launch a forum, which did not get off the ground but might still one day. It was going to specialise in a specific entertainment genre, mainly sci fi and horror. I think it is best to go into niche that you have knowledge of rather then trying to do a general forum. I would rather have a loyal base of like minded people as members even if it got less visitors.

Thanks for your reply, I agree with you that it is better to stick to one topic matter than try and generalize for every one. It is a shame that you haven't started one yet, I look forward to seeing the results when you do, I think it is a forum that I would like to join. Happy MyLotting

If I do ever get the forum started, you will be the first to know my friend. Thanks for the interest. Good luck with your forum too.

Horror/ghost stories. If I were to make my own forum, I'd make one for people to share their own stories about encounters with things they can't explain, and for people to post any ghost or horror stories they write. Of course, I'd include other sections too. A general or random banter section, at least, for people to talk about anything they please. And possibly other sections for specific interests, if they're requested.

Horror/Ghost stories, now that sounds intriguing. Not totally up my street but could be a good one for you to start. I have also included a general section in my forum, just to cover all the bits and bobs that aren't covered in the other sections and hopefully this will suffice, unless I see a number of topics going off in another direction, then I might add this in as a separate category. That's really cool. Having your own forum is fun but it takes a lot of work to maintain too. I actually had a few forums myself but that was some years back. I haven't gotten around to making a new one yet. But I tried making a general forum and that didn't go to well. There were too many things going on so it was kind of hard to keep track of. My other forum was smaller and specified so it was easier. It was based on music and just music related topics. There was a general music category as well as specific genre, lyrics, and all that. But if I were to start another forum now I'd want to do something anime/manga related. I've had ideas for it floating in my mind for a while but never gotten around to it. Anyways, good luck with your forum.

Thanks for your reply, I am trying to build this one slowly, keeping just to one genre, as I don't feel it is easy to either manage or promote a Large general Board and also I prefer to be able to keep active myself in it, which will only be possible if it is one niche and not covering a large spectrum of subjects.
