Does bartering exist anymore?

United States

I was just thinking we could use alot of work on our house. I'd love to trade someones skills for something I could do for them like baby sit their kids or maybe hubby could fix their pc ect. But you know with people having such tight budgets I would think people would be looking to save and do this. On the other hand you also want to deal with a friend or someone trustworthy so you don't get shorted on your end of the bargain. Does bartering exist anymore where you live? Like I said here in the USA it doesn't exist unless it's between friends, family or acquaintences. But does it still happen else where?

it kind of does, but it's usually for small things..most people won't do a 1=1 trade on larger stuff, they want the money. the worst here is usually the ones that ask you to store their car "for awhile".. next thing you know you've had a car on your property a year and a half and now it's expired tagged.

I hear what you are saying sadly it's all about the money. Not about helping each other out and both benefiting from it w/o any monitary costs.

There are agencies out there in the USA that are considered Bartering companies who you might be able to do some Trading with like this. The problem then becomes how to spend what you are getting if you are unable to find someone in that type of field the next time you want to Barter. But I have also seen on Craigslist there is a section called Bartering that you might be able to find something, or list what you are interested in. Just a thought,

I don't know. But it should. What a fantastic idea. I need work done on my house too. like you my hubby could fix a computer. I could cook a meal, do laundry sit with the kids, care for pets! I have a career customer service background, that could be useful somewhere too!Start the movement, Snuggle. I will follow.

Ha! Too bad we didn't live closer huh? *LOL* Yeah I only know one person who knows how to do any kind of home repairs (beyond my hubbys know how) but he's not very reliable if you recall me talking about his failure to show up to help hubby install our new doors.

Yeah. In our province, there are indegenous people living in nearby mountains. They usually goes to the market and exchange their stuffs (vegetable, bows and arrows, deer and boar meet) with common stuffs like clothing and rice. They don't know how to sale them as they are not familiar with money. In our modern culture too, we have some form of bartering (a modified one, I think) That is exchanging your old stuffs (like printers or cars) with newer ones. Sometimes, you had to add a little cash depending on the amount and bartering talk with the other person.

That's pretty-much what the entire marketplace is based on: the most-valuable resource is time---something that everyone has, but you pay them to delay self-gratification in favor of doing the job you need them to do. (And the money--mythologically--is representative of 'the time that others spent doing things that still others needed them to do ... so at-base, you're 'bartering' your time for their time.)

Yes barter is still alive I know I get my house cleaned every two weeks and in turn I give the woman's daughter an hour piano lesson each week. It is great for me, I don't have to spend 4 hours on the weekend doing something I hate do. Wasting my free time off. I don't get that much free time and why spend it doing something I hate. When I can do something once a week for an hour that I really like and have someone else do the dirty work for me. I am now looking for other people I can barter with. right now I am looking for someone who does hair who may want to barter

....Hi 3SnuggleBunnies, Bartering really should be more active now with the state of the world economies. I have heard that there are sites on the internet that are promoting bartering, although I have not checked them out as yet. I suggested to one individual that she could start up a part time weekend business as an in between man to bring people together who have something to trade. It could be profitable, by charging a small fee to register the offerings. I do have a friend who does maintenance work on a duplex for the right to store his tools in the duplex owners back yard shed. It works out well for both of them. Take it easy.

I live in NYC and I wish bartering did exist because it definitely would make things a lot cheaper around here. I'm sure it exists somewhere in the US, because I remember reading a year ago, after the recession started people were making trades with complete strangers. For example, families would want to move but no one would buy their house, so they found people to swap houses with. And I'm pretty sure it exists even more now considering how bad things are with the economy and how a lotof people don't even have a job or money to get the things they did.

Hi 3SnuggleBunnies(3184) Guess what? bartering does still exist in the united states and if you do some internet surfing you can find people willing to do so. Craigslist is a good place to start looking, look under barter and you may find what you want.
