Why so many words in English?

These days I am looking to improve my English. Some already know this but others don't ,it's said now. One aspect of learning a language is the deepening into the vocabulary of a language. It didn't come as a shock but neither did it come as a relief that English has a lot of words. I thought we Dutchies had a lot of words, but it's a tiny shadow compared to English. From this, a simple yet rather rhetorical question occurred: Why so many words?

English is said to have millions of words as a language, this is because English is widely use all around the world, when people is trying to create new word, for example, new words are created for science research, they mostly are in English. But I don't think people need to know every English word, most English words we never use them all our life, it is said if you can grasp or freely use two hundred English words, you can live in the USA freely.

just like any other language, English has evolved. new words are formed without deleting or erasing the old words. that includes slangs of the word, street words, invented words, acquired words, etc. i know, its confusing and hard to understand. but learning English is essential since it is considered as the universal language. hope you learn more English words.

I'm not a native speaker of English sometimes if I have read some unfamiliar words to me I look the meaning on the dictionary. English have many unfamiliar words that I don't know that's why I want to consult the dictionary if I found one to improve my vocabulary as well. Pronunciation and spelling sometimes is very difficult to remember because English is also a mixed of other languages.

You know it already friend that in myLot, we can improve our English proficiency. This is the one site when we can learn by simply writing our thoughts in English. I do learn too and are still learning. And the best part of it, we learn and at the same time, we are the one being paid. Would that be very great? YES, IT IS!

I would like to tell you that please better check it one more time that english has so many words.. Chinese,Japanese,Hindi are ahead in number of words ..best way to improve your English is to read English newspapers generally the news contains good words like..if a reporter has to write a sentence like "minute structure..."..he will write just one word that's "intricate"..so i think news paper is a good source to learn..

hi diamani why so many words in English? Our language through the decades picked up a lot of words from other countries and incorporated them into our own language. this really enlarged it and I had never realize to someone just learning our language that we seemed to have a lot of words. Do you come from Holland then, wow, thats one place I have always wanted to visit as from what I have been told you folks really keep your streets free from the litter that screws up our own streets here in the US. I guess over the decades we have added words to be more explicit in our meanings.as a native born I just naturally picked up most of language as a very young child. I think to someone trying to learn our language as a second language English is harder thana lot of other languages as we have a lot of words that sound alike but have different meanings. Keep up posting and you will begin to enlarge your vocabulary . good luck . happy mylotting.

I love the English language and yes there are definitely so many words, too many to count! I think that there's one sure way of improving your vocabulary and that is to read and read a lot! I love reading and I notice over time that I start to use some very difficult words as part of my everyday communication. This will take place naturally if you devote a lot of time to reading books! Reading for pleasure will do it, you don't have to concentrate solely on reference books. I love reading and writing. Writing on My Lot, this definitely improves communication and writing skills! Hi Diamania, English has been said to be one of the most difficult languages to learn, with so many words that even sound the same but have different meanings. New words are being added to the dictionary on every update. Even common slang words are being added as bonafied words. I think there will be no end to the number of words that will be created. Now you have me thinking, exactly how many words are there in the English language ? I think I will have to get my dictionary out and start counting Here is something random. It is a lyric from a song. "I have wealth beyond measure - My treasures are words" I belive that to be true

Every kind of language has itself's features. Every country's people will think their languae is most beautiful. I think english is most easy langusge, and it is used all over the world. English words are many, but common words are not many, about 2000. If you have time, every day learning it for one hour, mastering them is easy. Language is very important, and english is more important. If you master a foreign language, you will earn much money. There are many method for it.

Hi. I believe that there are a lot of English words because it's a living language. Many of its words were adopted from other languages such as Latin, Greek, Spanish, etc. Even if some of its words die over the years, there are a lot of new words being added/accepted to its dictionary. This makes the English language universal - it evolves with the world.

My native language is Spanish, and English compared to Spanish has a very narrow and limited vocabulary, so for me it's kind the opposite. English doesn't have that much words. Even so, words are important to be able to express concepts, or to name things, so I think all languages should have a wide and rich vocabulary :). Learning vocabulary in a foreign language is a pain, but once you do you notice how your ability to communicate is way better.
