Origin of New Year's Resolution, and My Own

I had a curiosity today about who started this tradition, and the internet gives two stories, none of which I can verify currently. The more common story is that it was started with a Roman god Janus. This interesting character had two faces, one facing the old year and the past, and another facing the new year and the future. The Romans used that time to think about the past and make plans for the future. There are a few stories out there that the Babylonians did it earlier during their new year that they celebrated around the end of March. I have the easiest resolution ever. For at least twenty years I never made any. I figure if I need any improvement, it would be best for me to start when I'm ready and not some arbitrary date set by tradition. That way I will do it when I'm ready, and not be stressed out even more by the holiday.

Funny, just wrote about this very thing and your discussion popped up. Agree entirely with your view that the best time to make a determined resolution is when you're really ready. Thing is, how do you generate that motivation in the first place? Research, research... and more research.

I can't give any input on the origin, but can tell you my next two years worth of resolutions. 2010 - gym four days a week, yoga twice a week, I am still eating vegan, and I have just passed the three week hump with no microwaving. I will not microwave again! 2011 - No more soy, and going completely raw. That will be a big challenge. Oh, and both year - mylot more. MUCH more.
